A scaffold with zinc-whitlockite nanoparticles accelerates bone reconstruction by promoting bone differentiation and angiogenesis

Summary: This study developed a novel organic/inorganic composite scaffold (ZnWH/G/H) with excellent mechanical properties, adjustable swelling ratio, and interconnected pore structure. The scaffold showed good biocompatibility and could promote osteogenic differentiation and angiogenesis, as well as inhibit bacterial proliferation. In a rabbit femoral defect model, the ZnWH/G/H scaffold significantly accelerated the process of bone reconstruction.

Summary: Introducing silicon (Si) and strontium (Sr) ions into calcium phosphate cement (CPC) using strontium doped calcium silicate (Sr-CS) can enhance osteogenesis and angiogenesis while suppressing osteoclastogenesis, making it a promising strategy for osteoporotic bone repair. In this study, the 20Sr-CS/CPC extract showed increased proliferation, ALP activity, osteogenesis-related gene and protein expression, as well as enhanced angiogenesis and suppressed osteoclastogenesis. It has great potential for stimulating osteoporotic bone regeneration.

Optimizing the strontium content to achieve an ideal osseointegration through balancing apatite-forming ability and osteogenic activity

Summary: This study showed that Sr incorporation in titanium implants can improve osseointegration, new bone formation, and mineralization. Implants with high Sr content were found to be more favorable for cell spreading, proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, and extracellular matrix mineralization. The competitive effect of osteogenic activity and apatite-forming ability on bone-implant osseointegration was proposed, providing a new strategy for implant design.

Silicon-Phosphorus-Nanosheets-Integrated 3D-Printable Hydrogel as a Bioactive and Biodegradable Scaffold for Vascularized Bone Regeneration

Summary: In this study, 2D silicon phosphorus (SiP) was explored as a new type of bioactive and biodegradable nanomaterial with excellent angiogenesis and osteogenesis. A 3D printed biohybrid hydrogel incorporating SiP-nanosheet showed superior biocompatibility and biodegradability in providing sustained release of Si and P elements. The results suggest that this GelMA-PEGDA/SiPAC scaffold has the potential to enhance osteogenesis and angiogenesis in bone tissue engineering applications, providing a promising alternative for regenerative medicine.

Understanding zinc-doped hydroxyapatite structures using first-principles calculations and convolutional neural network algorithm

Summary: This study combines first-principles optimization and machine learning algorithm to explore the mechanism of zinc-doped hydroxyapatite. The results show that zinc atoms enter the crystal of hydroxyapatite symmetrically, minimizing crystal deformation. Simulation results demonstrate that the doping of zinc ions can improve the fracture toughness of hydroxyapatite.

Enhancement in the osteogenesis and angiogenesis of calcium phosphate cement by incorporating magnesium-containing silicates

The results showed that all modified cements had good biomineralization and significantly stimulated the differentiation of bone and blood vessel cells. Enhancing the bioactivity of hydroxyapatite bioceramic via encapsulating with silica-based bioactive glass sol

Summary: In this research, BG-modified HA bioceramics were prepared using BG sol encapsulated HA powders. The study found that introducing 1 wt% and 3 wt% BG improved the mechanical performance and apatite mineralization activity of HA-based bioceramics, and played an important role in cellular response. The HA-based bioceramics modified with 1 wt% BG showed excellent biological performance and could be a promising material for bone repair.

Summary: Inspired by the mineralization process of natural bone, a biomimetic strategy was proposed to fabricate biohybrid scaffolds with the dual capabilities of promoting osteogenesis and angiogenesis. The designed scaffold exhibited a fibrous porous architecture, high specific surface area, improved mechanical performance, and tunable swelling and degradation behaviors. In vitro experiments demonstrated its excellent biocompatibility and biomineralization capacity, creating a favorable microenvironment for cell adhesion, proliferation, migration, osteogenic differentiation, and vascularization. In animal models, the scaffold had the potential to stimulate a chain of biological events for accelerated bone and vascular regeneration.

Strontium-incorporated bioceramic scaffolds for enhanced osteoporosis bone regeneration

Summary: This study aimed to fabricate bioactive scaffolds by incorporating strontium into modified amino-functional mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) and investigate their bioactivity in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that the strontium-incorporated scaffolds had good biocompatibility and enhanced osteogenic and angiogenic capacities. In addition, bioinformatics analysis suggested that the scaffolds could reduce reactive oxygen species levels in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in the osteoporotic model, playing an anti-osteoporosis role while promoting osteogenesis.

Biocompability evaluation of micro textures coated with zinc oxide on Ti-6Al-4V treated by nanosecond laser

Summary: Micro grooves coated with zinc oxide were successfully manufactured on Ti-6Al-4V surface through two-step nanosecond laser treatment to investigate the synergistic effects of micro/nano structures and Zn2+ on cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. Results showed significantly improved roughness and hydrophilicity on the laser-processing surface compared to the acid etching surface, with the appearance of ZnO diffraction peak. Strontium-calcium phosphate hybrid cement with enhanced osteogenic and angiogenic properties for vascularised bone regeneration
