Application of Box-Behnken design to mineralization and color removal of palm oil mill effluent by electrocoagulation process

Rakhmania et al.

Summary: In this study, electrocoagulation was used to treat palm oil mill effluent (POME), with the optimization of voltage, electrolysis time, and electrolyte amount to achieve the highest removal efficiencies of COD and color. Graphite was chosen as the electrode material and response surface methodology was utilized for parameter optimization. The experimental results under optimized conditions showed that the electrocoagulation process effectively reduced the COD, color, and oil and grease content of POME.

Microbial Fuel Cell-Based Biosensor for Simultaneous Test of Sodium Acetate and Glucose in a Mixed Solution

Song Qiu et al.

Summary: In this study, two types of MFC sensors, MFC-A and MFC-B, were developed and compared. MFC-A showed superior performance in the detection of sodium acetate and glucose, as well as higher output voltage and power density compared to MFC-B. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and microbial-community analysis revealed a richer anode biomass for MFC-A. A novel method for simultaneous testing of individual concentrations of sodium acetate and glucose in a mixed solution was proposed and verified using the sensitivities of the two MFC sensors.

Micro-microbial electrochemical sensor equipped with combined bioanode and biocathode for water biotoxicity monitoring

Na Chu et al.

Summary: The development of low-cost biosensors for water monitoring is expected to reduce potential risks from contamination accidents. This study reported a novel micro-microbial electrochemical sensor using combined bioanode and biocathode as the sensing element. By adjusting the ratio of bioanode to biocathode, a lower power generation can be achieved with a similar or even higher toxic response. Additionally, the voltage output is affected by both flow rate and acetate concentration.
