Effect of the mineral spatial distribution heterogeneity on the tensile strength of granite: Insights from PFC3D-GBM numerical analysis

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel three-dimensional grain-based model (GBM) called PFC3D-GBM is proposed to study the cracking behavior and macroscopic properties of granite. The model examines the effect of mineral grain distribution, geometric size, and volume composite on the mechanical characteristics. Numerical results show that force chains are formed around each contact when an external load is applied, and the orientation distribution of force chains is uniform and independent of the load level. The geometric size of mineral grains controls the mechanical behaviors, while the volume composition of quartz affects the number of transgranular cracks.

Nanoindentation of Supercrystalline Nanocomposites: Linear Relationship Between Elastic Modulus and Hardness

Cong Yan et al.

Summary: Supercrystalline nanocomposites (SCNCs) with periodic structures similar to atomic crystals exhibit a linear proportional relationship between hardness and elastic modulus. Comparisons with other materials, such as mineral-rich biocomposites, ultrafine grained materials, and face-centered cubic atomic crystals, which share similar characteristics, show similar behavior. The mechanical properties of SCNCs make them promising building blocks for next-generation hierarchical materials.

Influence of formation in-situ stress on mechanical heterogeneity of shale through grid nanoindentation

Mao Sheng et al.

Summary: This paper characterizes the mechanical heterogeneity of Longmaxi organic-rich shales using the grid nanoindentation technique. It is found that as the burial depth and in-situ stress increase, the overall elastic modulus and hardness of the samples also increase, while the percentage of soft minerals decreases. The probability distribution tends to concentrate, indicating weakened heterogeneity. The study also confirms that brittle fracture and ductile deformation can exist synchronously even under deep buried depth and high in-situ stress.

Summary: Depleted gas reservoirs are considered safe and reliable storage sites for sequestering CO2, with the potential for cost reduction through incremental recovery of residual natural gas after CO2 injection. Research on CO2 adsorption/desorption characteristics in depleted gas reservoirs and applications in unconventional resources contribute to advancing CO2-EGR technology knowledge. Additionally, assessing ecological and economic impacts of storing CO2 in different reservoir types is important for understanding the overall effectiveness of CO2-EGR operations.
