Version 2 of the TSIS-1 Hybrid Solar Reference Spectrum and Extension to the Full Spectrum

O. M. Coddington et al.

Summary: This paper presents two achievements related to a key data set. Firstly, it introduces the second version of the Total and Spectral Solar Irradiance Sensor-1 Hybrid Solar Reference Spectrum (TSIS-1 HSRS), which has been recognized as a new standard. Secondly, it presents a new full spectrum extension of the TSIS-1 HSRS. The importance of this work lies in providing an updated and extended solar irradiance reference standard for various applications.

Atmospheric nourishment of global ocean ecosystems

T. K. Westberry et al.

Summary: By using global satellite ocean color products, this study demonstrates that atmospheric dust deposition plays a significant role in providing vital nutrients for phytoplankton growth in the surface layer of the ocean. The responses to dust deposition vary regionally, with some areas experiencing substantial changes in phytoplankton biomass, while in other areas, the response is reflected in a change in physiological status or health. Climate-driven changes in atmospheric aerosols will alter the relative importance of this nutrient source.

Assessment of Estimated Phycocyanin and Chlorophyll-a Concentration from PRISMA and OLCI in Brazilian Inland Waters: A Comparison between Semi-Analytical and Machine Learning Algorithms

Thainara Munhoz Alexandre de Lima et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to test the accuracy of state-of-the-art water constituent retrieval algorithms for phycocyanin (PC) and chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentrations in Brazilian reservoirs. The algorithms were tested on PRISMA and Sentinel-3 OLCI data, with a focus on PC mapping using OLCI data for its high revisit time. The results suggest that applying the Semi-Analytical algorithm to PRISMA and OLCI data can accurately detect PC in Brazilian reservoirs.

Influence of foliar traits, watershed physiography, and nutrient subsidies on stream water quality in the upper midwestern United States

Aditya Singh et al.

Summary: The relationship between nutrient cycling and water quality in mixed-use ecosystems is influenced by interactions between biotic and abiotic processes. However, directly observing or modeling these processes at large spatial scales is challenging. This study used structural equation models (SEMs) to examine the impact of foliar chemical traits, watershed physiography, and human land use on water quality in watersheds across the Upper Midwestern United States. The results highlight the importance of imaging spectroscopy in measuring foliar traits that affect nutrient cycling in watersheds and may aid in developing resilient landscapes.

Performance and Early Results from the Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) Imaging Spectroscopy Mission

Robert O. Green et al.

Summary: The Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) utilizes a state-of-the-art imaging spectrometer to gather new observations of the Earth's arid and semi-arid lands to better understand and reduce uncertainties in mineral dust aerosol radiative forcing. The EMIT instrument, developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, has started collecting high-quality mineral composition determinations for these regions, which were previously unclear due to limited surface sample analysis. The instrument's characteristics, ground calibration, in-orbit performance, and early science results are reported in this paper.

Modeling surface ocean phytoplankton pigments from hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance on global scales

Sasha J. Kramer et al.

Summary: This study utilized hyperspectral remote sensing data to model phytoplankton pigment composition in the global open ocean. By using optimized principal components regression modeling, thirteen phytoplankton pigments representing five groups were successfully reconstructed. This work advances the development of global spectral models for phytoplankton pigment composition, but more high-quality data is needed for further improvement.

Distribution, Temporal Change, and Conservation Status of Tropical Seagrass Beds in Southeast Asia: 2000-2020

Kenji Sudo et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the recent distribution, temporal changes, causes of decline, and conservation status of tropical seagrass beds in Southeast Asia. The research found that over 60% of seagrass beds were declining at an average rate of 10.9% per year, with human-induced threats such as coastal development and fisheries being significant factors in the decline. The study recommends designating Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs) as legally effective Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to improve the conservation status of seagrass beds in the region.
