Processes controlling the Mg isotope behavior during granite weathering

BaiLing Fan et al.

Summary: Silicate weathering is a vital process for global materials cycling and climate regulation. Magnesium (Mg) isotopes are commonly used as a natural tracer to study weathering processes and biogeochemical cycles. However, the behavior of Mg isotopes during granite weathering is still not well understood.

Mid-Cretaceous Wake seamounts in NW Pacific originate from secondary mantle plumes with Arago hotspot composition

Xun Wei et al.

Summary: The geochemical and isotopic analysis of lavas from the Southern Wake seamount trail suggest a derivation from partial melting of secondary plume clusters emanating from the top of the Arago mantle plume. Another possibility is that the lavas could have originated from secondary plumelets associated with the Pacific Large Low Shear Velocity Province (LLSVP). The lavas show signatures of FOZO-HIMU-like isotopic compositions, falling within the Arago hotspot field.

Summary: This study found that the magnesium isotope composition in creek water in a small forested catchment in Germany does not exhibit seasonal variability, and it is mainly controlled by cation-exchange processes in the regolith.

Phyllosilicate controls on magnesium isotopic fractionation during weathering of granites: Implications for continental weathering and riverine system

Martin Yan Hei Li et al.

Summary: Continental weathering plays a crucial role in releasing magnesium from rocks to the hydrosphere and biosphere. Magnesium isotopes can be used as a powerful tool to trace the biogeochemical cycle of magnesium, but the causes of significant isotopic fractionation during silicate weathering are not well understood. This study demonstrates that the dissolution and formation of phyllosilicates are the main factors controlling magnesium isotopic fractionation during sub-tropical weathering of granite, and different mechanisms of formation and dissolution could cause variations in fractionation.

Neodymium isotopic constraints on Cenozoic Asian dust provenance changes linked to the exhumation history of the northern Tibetan Plateau and the Central Asian Orogenic Belt

Yibo Yang et al.

Summary: Studying the provenance history of Asian dust can provide insights into the evolution of topography and climate in inland Asia. Lack of long dust Nd isotopic records from the Tibetan Plateau and Central Asian Orogenic Belt has hindered a full understanding of Asian dust provenance changes. Results indicate significant changes in the epsilon(Nd)(0) values and contribution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt to Asian dust at approximately 25 Ma, likely related to tectonic uplift and aridification in inland Asia.
