Marine Mixed Layer Height Detection Using Ship-Borne Coherent Doppler Wind Lidar Based on Constant Turbulence Threshold

Lu Wang et al.

Summary: Marine mixed layer height detection using a ship-borne coherent Doppler wind lidar based on a constant turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate threshold is realized and demonstrated. The MLH can be retrieved from the CDWL estimated TKEDR by setting an appropriate threshold. The experiments show that a threshold of 10^(-4) m(2) s(-3) is applicable for retrieving both inland and marine MLHs.

Estimation of turbulence parameters in the atmospheric boundary layer of the Bohai Sea, China, by coherent Doppler lidar and mesoscale model

Xiang Jin et al.

Summary: This study estimates turbulence parameters in the marine atmospheric boundary layer using observation data and numerical models, and investigates their temporal and spatial variations. The results show that the numerical model can simulate turbulence parameters well, but there is still some deviation between the measured and simulated values due to the uncertainty of the model.

Evidence of Ocean Waves Signature in the Space-Time Turbulent Spectra of the Lower Marine Atmosphere Measured by a Scanning LiDAR

Liad Paskin et al.

Summary: Accurately describing atmospheric turbulent flow in the offshore environment is crucial for more accurate weather and climate forecasting and efficient engineering solutions for exploiting offshore renewable energies. This study deployed a scanning LiDAR to study micro-scale wind-wave interactions and discovered the effects of waves on wind speed, providing new perspectives for the study of micro-scale wind-wave interactions.

Turbulence in the Marine Boundary Layer and Air Motions below Stratocumulus Clouds at the ARM Eastern North Atlantic Site

Virendra P. Ghate et al.

Summary: Marine stratocumulus clouds are closely related to turbulence in the boundary layer, and drizzle is commonly seen within them. Data from the ARM's ENA site over a six-year period showed that variance of vertical velocity in the marine boundary layer is influenced by wind direction, season, and cloud cover. Moreover, vertical velocity and cloud fraction display a distinct diurnal cycle, with higher values at night compared to daytime.

Sensitivity of Radiative Flux Simulations to Ice Cloud Parameterization over the Equatorial Western Pacific Ocean Region

Tong Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sensitivity of radiation flux calculations to ice cloud parameterization over the equatorial western Pacific Ocean region using a combination of active and passive satellite cloud retrievals. Three ice cloud schemes are tested, showing differences in shortwave and longwave cloud radiative effects. Cloud optical properties are used to classify ice clouds into three types, with varying dominance of shortwave heating in different cloud types.
