Sensitivity experiments on the role of moisture in the eastward propagation of MJO

Xiaoyu Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, the role of moisture in the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) eastward propagation is investigated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with nudging assimilation. The results show that the ability of the model to simulate the MJO eastward propagation is sensitive to the cumulus parameterization schemes. The atmospheric moisture distribution is found to be the key factor for the eastward propagation of the MJO.

Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Meridional Oscillations Over East Asia and Their Influences on Precipitation

Yiming Xu et al.

Summary: The major features of East Asia summer monsoon are intraseasonal meridional wave trains, and two intraseasonal meridional oscillations (ISMOs) have been identified, namely ISMO1 and ISMO2. ISMO1 is primarily forced by soil moisture anomalies in West Europe, propagating southward and having a large variance in the upper level. ISMO2 propagates northward from the tropical western North Pacific to East Asia and is closely related to BSISO2. Both ISMO1 and ISMO2 explain a large fraction of the total intraseasonal variances of EASM, with ISMO1 responsible for precipitation anomalies over eastern China and ISMO2 having a major influence in southern China.

Regularity and Irregularity of the Seasonal Northward March of the East Asian Summer Wet Environment and the Influential Factors

Bo Sun et al.

Summary: This study examined the regular and irregular characteristics of the East Asian summer wet environment northward march over the past six decades and in the future, finding that various climate factors, such as the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation and the seasonally varying western North Pacific eddy, play important roles in influencing the phenomenon.

The Record-breaking Meiyu in 2020 and Associated Atmospheric Circulation and Tropical SST Anomalies

Yihui Ding et al.

Summary: The record-breaking meiyu season in the Yangtze-Huaihe River valley in 2020 was characterized by long duration, abundant precipitation, and frequent heavy rainstorm processes, closely associated with a significant quasi-biweekly oscillation in the East Asian monsoon circulation system.

Contribution of Water Vapor to the Record-Breaking Extreme Meiyu Rainfall along the Yangtze River Valley in 2020

Licheng Wang et al.

Summary: The extreme Meiyu rainfall along the Yangtze River valley in 2020 was mainly attributed to the greatly enhanced vertically integrated water vapor transport (IVT) convergence, mean circulation dynamic (MCD) contribution associated with anomalous East Asian summer monsoon (EASM), and the thermodynamic component (TH) contribution due to water vapor anomaly. The excessive moist static energy (MSE) associated with the largest water vapor anomaly substantially increased atmospheric instability, favoring the extreme 2020 Meiyu rainfall intensity. The tremendous IVT to the Yangtze River valley from the South China Sea and Bay of Bengal during the 2020 Meiyu period was supported by low-level anticyclone anomalies over the western North Pacific (WNP) and Bay of Bengal, generated by super suppressed WNP convective activities as a Matsuno-Gill type response.

Roles of the Tibetan Plateau vortices in the record Meiyu rainfall in 2020

Lun Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed the important role of TPVs in the record Meiyu rainfall, suggesting that their effects may have been underestimated previously. TPVs dying out over the Tibetan Plateau can transform into troughs and continue to influence rainfall in the Yangtze-Huaihe River basin. Additionally, southwest vortices, important rainfall producers in China, tend to be generated and maintained when TPVs are located over the eastern plateau.
