Upwind Droughts Enhance Half of the Heatwaves Over North China

Shiyu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study reveals that upwind droughts significantly enhance heatwaves in North China, with circulation anomalies and upwind soil moisture droughts contributing to 71% of the heat. The study also suggests that upwind droughts from southern and western source regions contribute to 67.9% of the heat anomalies.

The influence of soil dry-out on the record-breaking hot 2013/2014 summer in Southeast Brazil

J. L. Geirinhas et al.

Summary: The summer of 2013/2014 in Southeast Brazil was characterized by an unprecedented combination of heat and dry conditions, leading to significant socio-economic impacts. This study provides a detailed analysis of the season, focusing on the role of land-atmosphere interactions in temperature escalation. It was found that the strong coupling between soil moisture and temperature resulted in record-breaking temperatures, and played a key role in triggering a prolonged heatwave.

Validity of Global Fog-Day Trends Indicated by the Global Surface Summary of the Day (GSOD) Data Set

Thomas Lavigne et al.

Summary: This study investigates the trends observed in fog-days over the past 44 years and examines the validity of these trends under varying observational techniques. The results show regional trends in fog-day data and highlight the importance of considering different data collection techniques when analyzing fog-day occurrence. Furthermore, the analysis suggests that temperature and moisture changes may be linked to the long-term regional fog-day trends.

Different mechanisms for daytime, nighttime, and compound heatwaves in southern China

Ming Luo et al.

Summary: Heatwaves bring immense stress to human society and the environment. Daytime heatwaves have clear skies and reduced cloud cover and moisture, while nighttime heatwaves are characterized by cloudier and moister conditions. Compound heatwaves combine the characteristics of both daytime and nighttime heatwaves.

Quantifying Flash Droughts Over China From 1980 to 2017

Kaiqi Fu et al.

Summary: Flash droughts can develop rapidly and have become more intense and longer-lasting in western and northern China. The contribution of precipitation to flash drought duration decreases as the intensity of flash droughts increases, while temperature and net radiation play a leading role. Weak water vapor transport is associated with flash droughts in Northwestern China and Southwestern China, while strong downward motion affects flash droughts in Northeastern China, Northern China, Southern China, and Middle-Lower Yangtze. Downward motion is accompanied by clear sky conditions, higher air temperature, and higher surface solar radiation, which accelerate and amplify flash droughts triggered by initial precipitation deficits.

Changes in land-atmosphere coupling increase compound drought and heatwaves over northern East Asia

Ye-Won Seo et al.

Summary: Compound drought and heatwaves events have significant impacts on socio-ecological systems, but the mechanisms behind these events are not fully understood. This study investigates the drastic increases in compound drought and heatwaves events in northern East Asia from 1980 to 2019 and finds that the heatwaves in this region are highly likely to be closely related to drought. The increase in the coupling strength between soil moisture and temperature is one of the reasons behind this phenomenon.

Dynamics and characteristics of dry and moist heatwaves over East Asia

Kyung-Ja Ha et al.

Summary: This study explores the mechanisms of dry and moist heatwaves over East Asia using observations, climate change projections, and new generation Earth System models. The research finds that dry heatwaves are amplified by the convergence of wave activity over the region, resulting in surface warming. On the other hand, moist heatwaves are triggered by local anticyclonic anomalies and amplified by cloud and water vapor feedback. Model simulations project an intensification of dry heatwaves and an increase in moist heatwave days in response to rising greenhouse gas concentrations.

Utility of integrated IMERG precipitation and GLEAM potential evapotranspiration products for drought monitoring over mainland China

Shanhu Jiang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated the utility of integrated long-term satellite-based precipitation and evapotranspiration products for drought monitoring in mainland China, finding that IMERG-F performed better than IMERG-E and IMERG-L. GLEAM PET products well simulated the trend of reference PET, but generally underestimated it in some regions. SPEIs can effectively capture the temporal-spatial evolution of drought events.

Land-Atmosphere Interactions Exacerbated the Drought and Heatwave Over Northern Europe During Summer 2018

Paul A. Dirmeyer et al.

Summary: The exceptional 2018 drought and heatwave in northern Europe resulted in forest fires in Sweden, searing heat in Germany, and water restrictions in England, primarily due to exacerbated heatwave caused by land-atmosphere coupling. The continuous land-atmosphere feedbacks were significantly influenced by unusually low soil water content over wide areas, which further intensified the heatwave across much of northern Europe.
