Attentional Bias to Emotional Facial Expressions in Undergraduates With Suicidal Ideation: An ERP Study

Lin Lin et al.

Summary: Individuals with suicide ideation exhibit attentional bias towards negative emotions, particularly fearful and sad facial expressions, which is evident at an early stage of attention.

Feature-based attention interacts with emotional picture content during mid-latency and late ERP processing stages

Sebastian Schindler et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of attention on the event-related potential (ERP) to negative and neutral pictures. The results showed that there were interactions between attention tasks and emotion processing, and the impact of attention on emotional differences depended on the time and ERP components.

Effects of task load, spatial attention, and trait anxiety on neuronal responses to fearful and neutral faces

Sebastian Schindler et al.

Summary: The study examined how different components of event-related potential (ERP) to threat-related facial expressions are modulated by attentional conditions and interindividual differences in trait anxiety. The N170 response to fearful faces was found to increase regardless of perceptual load and spatial attention conditions, while the EPN response to fearful faces only increased during low load and spatial attention to the face. The results question the hypothesis of a general hypersensitivity toward fearful expressions in anxious individuals.

Theta-Burst Stimulation Is Able to Impact Cognitive Processing: A P300 and Neuropsychological Test Study

Nuno Filipe Cardoso Pinto et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of TBS stimulation on left DLPFC on both neuropsychological and neurophysiological tests. Results showed that inhibitory stimulation delayed P300 peak latencies and influenced performance in Stroop tests. Mixed evaluation using neuropsychological and neurophysiological resources is important for research involving transcranial magnetic stimulation and cognition.

Event-related-potential based evidence of cognitive dysfunction of processing emotional faces in major depressive disorder patients

Wei Xin et al.

Summary: Research findings suggest that MDD patients exhibit altered N170 and EPN components when processing emotional faces, with significantly reduced N170 and delayed/lower EPN compared to the control group. This indicates dysfunction in emotional face processing in MDD patients.

Event-Related Potential Correlates of Valence, Arousal, and Subjective Significance in Processing of an Emotional Stroop Task

Kamil K. Imbir et al.

Summary: This study is the first to measure event-related potentials associated with the emotional Stroop task (EST) using orthogonal factorial manipulation of emotional valence, arousal, and subjective significance. The results showed that reaction times were influenced by emotional valence and the interaction between valence and arousal, with arousal effects particularly significant for neutrally valenced words. Electrophysiological results indicated correlations between valence and subjective significance with amplitude differences in the P2 component, and N450 component amplitude variations with levels of subjective significance. Moreover, exploratory event-related potential analysis provided additional insights beyond traditional component-based analysis, suggesting that cognitive control effects in the EST can be altered by manipulation of subjective significance.

Decision-making in suicidal behavior: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Aina Sastre-Buades et al.

Summary: Studies show that individuals who have attempted suicide exhibit deficits in decision-making, specifically performing worse under conditions of risk. These impairments in decision-making are independent of age, gender, and psychiatric disorders, indicating they may be considered a cognitive trait of suicidal vulnerability.

Summary: The study used event-related potentials to investigate attentional bias in adolescents with acute suicidal behavior, finding that suicide attempters had longer reaction times to suicide-related words, significantly reduced P3 amplitudes, and delayed P3 latencies compared to controls.

Prolonged P300 Latency in Antipsychotic-Free Subjects with At-Risk Mental States Who Later Developed Schizophrenia

Yuko Higuchi et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with schizophrenia showed smaller P300 amplitudes compared to healthy controls and subjects with at-risk mental states (ARMS), while subjects with ARMS had prolonged P300 latency. During follow-up, 8 out of 33 ARMS subjects developed overt psychosis while 25 did not. ARMS-P exhibited worse cognitive functions at baseline compared to ARMS-NP.

Summary: The current study found that consonance captured attention more strongly than dissonance when task demand was high. The differences in attentional capture between chord categories may have been induced by high task demand.
