Influence of academic stress and school bullying on self-harm behaviors among Chinese middle school students: The mediation effect of depression and anxiety

Hui Chen et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between academic stress, school bullying, and self-harm behaviors among Chinese middle school students, and to examine the role of anxiety and depression in this relationship. A questionnaire survey was conducted among middle school students (aged 12-16 years) in Changsha city using an online platform. The results showed that anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, school bullying, and academic stress were common factors associated with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicide attempts (SAs). Depressive symptoms mediated the association between school bullying and academic stress with SAs or NSSI, while anxiety symptoms only mediated the association between school bullying and academic stress with NSSI. The findings suggest the need for strategies to reduce academic pressure, prevent school bullying, and address negative emotions among middle school students to prevent self-harm behaviors.

Parenting behaviors, parenting styles, and non-suicidal self-injury in young people: a systematic review

Zhi Hui Fong et al.

Summary: The systematic review examined the association between parenting behavior and parenting styles with NSSI in young people. The results showed that low parental support, high psychological control, and high reactive control were more consistently associated with NSSI, while evidence for behavioral control was equivocal. Results suggest that parenting styles play a role in the etiology of NSSI in young people.

Assessing Clinical Features of Adolescents Suffering from Depression Who Engage in Non-Suicidal Self-Injury

Maria Serra et al.

Summary: Depressive disorders and non-suicidal self-injury are significant mental health issues among adolescents, with high rates of co-occurrence. This study compared the clinical features of two groups of adolescents with depressive disorders, those who engaged in non-suicidal self-injury and those who did not. It was found that the group with non-suicidal self-injury had more severe depressive symptoms, suggesting the importance of considering self-injury as a specifier for depressive disorders.

Age and gender effects on non-suicidal self-injury, and their interplay with psychological distress

Paul Oliver Wilkinson et al.

Summary: NSSI (non-suicidal self-injury) is an important public health issue, with high prevalence and associations with future mental illness and suicide. This study found a significant quadratic interaction between age and gender on NSSI prevalence, with NSSI more common in females ages 16-19. General distress partially mediated the effects of age and gender on NSSI.

The association between non-suicidal self-injury and negative life events in children and adolescents in underdeveloped regions of south-western China

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the association between NSSI prevalence, severity, repetition, and negative life events among children and adolescents in underdeveloped regions of southwestern China. The results showed that negative life events were positively associated with NSSI, repeated NSSI, and severe NSSI. Therefore, interventions focused on negative life events may be effective in reducing NSSI among school children and adolescents in underdeveloped regions.

Global prevalence and characteristics of non-suicidal self-injury between 2010 and 2021 among a non-clinical sample of adolescents: A meta-analysis

Qingqing Xiao et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis study found a high prevalence of NSSI in nonclinical sample of adolescents, but there are some changes in severity, methods, and reasons. Based on the current evidence, adolescents in modern society are more inclined to implement NSSI behavior by a variety of ways, which usually are repetitive, and moderate and severe injuries are gradually increasing. It is also worth noting that adolescents with siblings or in single-parent families are relatively more likely to implement NSSI behavior due to maladjustment to the new family model.

Summary: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a serious public health concern among adolescents, with high prevalence rates. Prevalence of engagement and frequency of non-suicidal self-injury behaviors in adolescence: an investigation of the longitudinal course and the role of temperamental effortful control

Concetta Esposito et al.

Summary: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a common maladaptive behavior reported in adolescence, with an onset during early to middle adolescence and a decline in late adolescence. Low effortful control is associated with a higher likelihood of NSSI engagement. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms underlying the prevalence and severity of NSSI throughout adolescence.

Gratitude buffers the effects of stressful life events and deviant peer affiliation on adolescents' non-suicidal self-injury

Chang Wei et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of stressful life events on adolescent NSSI and found that deviant peer affiliation partially mediated this relationship, while gratitude served as a protective factor to buffer this indirect effect. Therefore, teaching gratitude may be a helpful component in prevention and intervention programs for reducing adolescent NSSI.

Prevalence and risk factors for non-suicidal self-injury among patients with depression or bipolar disorder in China

Lu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury and its risk factors in patients with depression or bipolar disorder in China. Results showed that 62.2% of the patients reported NSSI in the past year, with pinching and scratching being the most common methods. Young age, unemployment, higher monthly family income, single status, impulsivity, long illness duration, and ACEs were identified as risk factors for NSSI in these patients. This study emphasizes the need for increased awareness, targeted assessment, and intervention for NSSI in Chinese patients with depression or bipolar disorder.
