Reliability of the Heartbeat Tracking Task to Assess Interoception

Summary: Interoception refers to perceiving and interpreting internal sensations, and the heartbeat tracking task (HTT) is commonly used to assess interoception. However, there is a lack of reliability evidence for this measure, which may threaten interoception assessment. This study found that the HTT showed good relative reliability for interoceptive accuracy and moderate reliability for sensibility and awareness in healthy adults.

Disentangling interoceptive abilities in alexithymia

Summary: Research on interoceptive abilities in relation to emotional experience, particularly in individuals with alexithymia, has shown that higher levels of alexithymia are associated with higher interoceptive accuracy and sensibility, but lower interoceptive awareness. Interoceptive awareness has been identified as the most accurate predictor of alexithymia, with over 92% accuracy. These findings suggest a dissociation between interoceptive accuracy and awareness in alexithymia, which may help to explain the psycho-physiological mechanisms underlying this personality trait.

The potential parallels in the underlying neurobiological mechanisms of emotionality, pain, and AUD suggest that interventions targeting pain may improve adaptive affect regulation skills, which in turn could reduce negative affect and its effect on pain sensitivity among individuals with AUD.
