Couples losing kinship: A systematic review of weight stigma in romantic relationships

Alexandria M. Schmidt et al.

Summary: Romantic relationship quality is a strong predictor of health and well-being. Weight stigma, especially weight criticism between partners, is consistently associated with poorer relationship functioning. Future research should focus on dyadic, longitudinal designs and incorporate weight-inclusive approaches to better understand the association between weight stigma and relationship functioning.

Where Sex Meets Gender: How Sex and Gender Come Together to Cause Sex Differences in Mental Illness

Dorte M. Christiansen et al.

Summary: Sex differences are prevalent in multiple mental disorders, including prevalence, symptom profile, age of onset, comorbidities, functional impairment, prognosis, and treatment response. This conceptual article discusses theories and empirical studies of sex- and gender-related influences in mental health, with a focus on autism spectrum disorder, eating disorders, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Gender differences not only exist between men and women, but also within each sex, due to variations in genes, hormone levels, self-perceptions, trauma experiences, and interpersonal relationships. A conceptual diatheses-stress model is proposed to understand and predict sex/gender differences in mental disorders.

Men's experiences of eating disorder treatment: A qualitative systematic review of men-only studies

Candice Richardson et al.

Summary: Despite the common belief that eating disorders primarily affect women, the incidence among men is increasing. Men often seek help for their eating disorders late in the course of their illness and face unique challenges accessing appropriate treatment. There is a need for tailored interventions and increased awareness of men's experiences with eating disorders.

Understanding the relationship between sexual harassment and eating disorder psychopathology: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Samantha Hayes et al.

Summary: This systematic review synthesized evidence on the relationship between sexual harassment and eating disorder psychopathology, finding a significant association and identifying moderators such as gender, posttraumatic stress, and anxiety. However, due to the predominance of cross-sectional designs in the reviewed studies, more longitudinal research is recommended to better understand the causal relationship between sexual harassment and eating disorders.

Comparison of eating disorder characteristics and depression comorbidity in adolescent males and females: An observational study

Samuel J. Ridout et al.

Summary: Depression comorbid with eating disorders is common and can worsen the severity of both disorders. Little is published regarding depression and eating disorders in male adolescents. This retrospective observational study found that male adolescents had significantly greater pre-hospitalization weight loss and longer eating disorder duration, and were 1.6 times more likely to have comorbid depression compared to female patients, suggesting increased detection and treatment in adolescent males is warranted.

Latent Class Analysis of Obesogenic Behaviors among Korean Adolescents: Associations with Weight-Related Outcomes

Haein Lee et al.

Summary: This study explored sex-specific latent class models of adolescent obesogenic behaviors using data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey in 2019. The analysis identified 3-class models for both boys and girls, with different distributions of weight-related outcomes across these classes. Factors such as school year, residential area, academic performance, psychological status, and perceived economic status were found to predict latent class membership for both sexes, highlighting the importance of tailored interventions for obesity prevention and treatment.

Facial femininity and perceptions of eating disorders: A reverse-correlation study

Valerie Douglas et al.

Summary: Eating disorders are prevalent among college students, yet they are not accurate in identifying such disorders, especially when race is involved. This study explores how biases based on facial appearance and disordered eating may differ depending on the race of face images, indicating that stereotyped beliefs about femininity and the likelihood of disordered eating may interact with perceptual processes.
