Where Sex Meets Gender: How Sex and Gender Come Together to Cause Sex Differences in Mental Illness

Summary: Sex differences are prevalent in multiple mental disorders, including prevalence, symptom profile, age of onset, comorbidities, functional impairment, prognosis, and treatment response. This conceptual article discusses theories and empirical studies of sex- and gender-related influences in mental health, with a focus on autism spectrum disorder, eating disorders, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Gender differences not only exist between men and women, but also within each sex, due to variations in genes, hormone levels, self-perceptions, trauma experiences, and interpersonal relationships. A conceptual diatheses-stress model is proposed to understand and predict sex/gender differences in mental disorders.

An update on the prevalence of eating disorders in the general population: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Comparison of eating disorder characteristics and depression comorbidity in adolescent males and females: An observational study

Summary: Depression comorbid with eating disorders is common and can worsen the severity of both disorders. Little is published regarding depression and eating disorders in male adolescents. This retrospective observational study found that male adolescents had significantly greater pre-hospitalization weight loss and longer eating disorder duration, and were 1.6 times more likely to have comorbid depression compared to female patients, suggesting increased detection and treatment in adolescent males is warranted.

Latent Class Analysis of Obesogenic Behaviors among Korean Adolescents: Associations with Weight-Related Outcomes
