Vegetable biology and breeding in the genomics era

Hongbo Li et al.

Summary: Vegetable crops are essential for human nutrition and have significant economic value in rural societies. However, genetic studies of these crops have been lagging behind major food crops, which limits the application of molecular breeding. Recent advances in genome sequencing technologies have allowed for the construction of reference genomes and the use of multi-omics datasets in vegetable crop research. These advancements have provided insights into their evolution, allowed for genetic dissection of agronomic traits, and accelerated the application of biotechnologies in vegetable breeding.

Tomato transcriptional repressor SlBES1.8 influences shoot apical meristem development by inhibiting the DNA binding ability of SlWUS

Deding Su et al.

Summary: The transcriptional repressor SlBES1.8 was identified as a novel co-regulator of WUS in the development of plant shoot apical meristems. It interacts with WUS and inhibits WUS-DNA binding, resulting in an enlargement of SAM size, increased floral organ numbers, and changes in fruit shape.

Genome-wide association study of eigenvectors provides genetic insights into selective breeding for tomato metabolites

Junwei Yang et al.

Summary: A genetic study was conducted to investigate the changes in metabolite content during tomato domestication and improvement using genome-wide association study (GWAS) and eigenvector decomposition (EigenGWAS). Two independent gene sets were identified that affected fruit metabolites, and 57 candidate genes related to polyphenol and polyamine biosynthesis were discovered. The major candidate gene chlorogenate: glucarate caffeoyltransferase (SlCGT), which affects tomato fruit quality and disease resistance, was also identified, revealing the domestication mechanism of polyphenols.

Brassinosteroids regulate rice seed germination through the BZR1-RAmy3D transcriptional module

Min Xiong et al.

Summary: Seed dormancy and germination are critical for plant growth and crop production. This study reveals that brassinosteroids, a type of plant hormone, promote rice seed germination and post-germination growth by modulating starch metabolism. The transcriptional module BZR1-RAmy3D plays a key role in this process.

The BES1/BZR1-family transcription factor MpBES1 regulates cell division and differentiation in Marchantia polymorpha

Martin A. Mecchia et al.

Summary: Brassinosteroids (BRs) are essential for growth and development in seed plants, controlling mitotic activity in meristems and organ boundaries, and meristem determinacy. The signaling cascade of BR perception and regulation of transcriptional regulators has been described in detail in model angiosperms, with homologs found in streptophyte algae and land plant lineages. The transcription factor MpBES1, present in the bryophyte Marchantia polymorpha, has similar functions to AtBES1 and AtBZR1 in Arabidopsis, indicating a shared evolutionary role in controlling cell division and differentiation in plants.

Identification and characterization of GLOBE, a major gene controlling fruit shape and impacting fruit size and marketability in tomato

Edgar Sierra-Orozco et al.

Summary: This study identified the genetic basis of flat/globe fruit shape in large-fruited fresh-market tomatoes and pinpointed a gene named GLOBE that plays a crucial role in determining the fruit shape. The gene was found to have predominantly recessive effects on various fruit traits except for fruit size, where it acted additively. The presence of a single base insertion in the gene Solyc12g006860 was associated with the shape of the fruit in all populations tested, confirming the gene's role in fruit shape determination.
