Does recurrent gestational diabetes mellitus increase the risk of preterm birth? A population-based cohort study

Guoju Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between recurrent gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and an increased risk of preterm birth. It found that GDM increased the risk of preterm birth in both nulliparous and multiparous mothers, but recurrent GDM did not further increase the risk of prematurity in multiparous mothers.

A Clinical Update on Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Arianne Sweeting et al.

Summary: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) refers to abnormal glucose tolerance that occurs during pregnancy and is associated with higher infant birthweight, as well as future maternal and offspring cardiometabolic disease. The prevalence of GDM is increasing globally due to factors such as rising obesity rates in women of reproductive age and revised diagnostic criteria. Although there is a lack of international consensus on the diagnosis of GDM, it is important to recognize it as an early risk factor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, considering its long-term complications for both mothers and offspring.

Altered Lipid Metabolism in Obese Women With Gestational Diabetes and Associations With Offspring Adiposity

Samuel Furse et al.

Summary: Gestational diabetes in obese women is associated with elevated levels of specific lipids related to de novo lipogenesis, which are also correlated with measures of offspring adiposity. These findings suggest that the effects of GDM on neonatal body composition may not be solely due to hyperglycemia, but may involve other pathways.

Application Value of Predictive Model Based on Maternal Coagulation Function and Glycolipid Metabolism Indicators in Early Diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Ying Zheng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether first-trimester fasting plasma glucose (FPG), blood coagulation function, and lipid metabolism could predict the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Through observation and analysis of 584 pregnant women, it was found that some indicators such as FPG, APTT, TG, and pre-pregnancy BMI can serve as independent predictors of GDM. The established GDM risk prediction model has important clinical value in the early identification, intervention, and treatment of GDM.

The genetic risk of gestational diabetes in South Asian women

Amel Lamri et al.

Summary: This study investigated the risk factors for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in South Asian women, and found that a type 2 diabetes (T2D) polygenic risk score (PRS) and family history of diabetes were strongly and independently associated with GDM-related traits.

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop a risk prediction model for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) based on common maternal demographics and routine clinical variables in the Chinese population. A predictive model for GDM was established using multivariable logistic regression analysis, and the consistency and discriminative validity of the model were evaluated. The model exhibited good predictive ability, discriminative performance, and clinical utility.

Can Thyroid Screening in the First Trimester Improve the Prediction of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus?

Zagorka Milovanovic et al.

Summary: This study assessed the clinical utility of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) marker, elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and thyroid antibodies in predicting gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The results showed a positive correlation between increased TSH levels and the presence of thyroid antibodies with the risk of GDM. Patient age, TSH 4 IU/mL, and anti TPO Ab > 35 IU/mL were identified as significant predictors of GDM, improving the screening performance in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Summary: This study found that the early AST/ALT level of pregnant women is negatively correlated with the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). A nomogram model including AST/ALT, maternal age, and other factors showed good predictive ability for the occurrence of GDM.

Perspectives from metabolomics in the early diagnosis and prognosis of gestational diabetes mellitus

Muqiu Zhang et al.

Summary: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common metabolic disorder in pregnant women. Early detection and treatment using metabolomics can reduce the risk of adverse outcomes. Metabolomics offers opportunities in diagnosing and differentiating GDM, as well as monitoring metabolic changes throughout pregnancy.

Fasting plasma glucose in the first trimester is related to gestational diabetes mellitus and adverse pregnancy outcomes

Jia-Ning Tong et al.

Summary: The study concluded that first-trimester fasting plasma glucose is associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and other adverse pregnancy outcomes, with significant correlations between GDM and first-trimester fasting plasma glucose. Using first-trimester fasting plasma glucose as a screening tool can help identify pregnant women at high risk for GDM and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Targeting lipid GPCRs to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus - progress and challenges

Julien Ghislain et al.

Summary: This Review summarizes the physiological functions, pharmacology, and clinical studies of G protein-coupled receptors specific for lipid metabolite ligands and discusses the challenges associated with developing therapeutics for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Currently, therapeutic approaches targeting these receptors focus on increasing insulin secretion either by directly acting on beta-cells or indirectly on gastrointestinal enteroendocrine cells that release hormones regulating insulin secretion.

Summary: This study evaluated the predictive accuracy of published risk estimation models for the development of GDM in early pregnancy. Most models showed acceptable discrimination but lacked calibration, with simple biochemical variables like fasting glucose, HbA1c, and triglycerides improving risk prediction. A model incorporating clinical and laboratory parameters demonstrated satisfactory accuracy for further investigations.
