Childhood manifestations of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: A Finnish nationwide register-based cohort study

Sakari Wahrmann et al.

Summary: The study aimed to describe the clinical manifestations of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome patients in the Finnish paediatric population. Nationwide registry data from all public hospitals in Finland between 2004 and 2018 were analyzed. The study found that 22q11.2 deletion syndrome is associated with increased mortality and substantial multimorbidity in children, highlighting the need for a structured multidisciplinary approach for managing these patients.

Clinical, Immunological, and Genetic Findings in a Cohort of Patients with the DiGeorge Phenotype without 22q11.2 Deletion

Summary: Chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is a primary immunodeficiency with a wide range of clinical presentations and T-cell deficiency. We reported a cohort of patients who showed highly suggestive clinical features of 22q11.2DS but without the 22q11.2 deletion. The cardinal features of 22q11.2DS were observed in most patients, and immunologic assessment revealed varying degrees of T-cell immunodeficiency. Array CGH analysis identified new copy number variations (CNVs) in these patients.

Characterization of Autoimmune Thyroid Disease in a Cohort of 73 Paediatric Patients Affected by 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome: Longitudinal Single-Centre Study

Silvia Ricci et al.

Summary: This study longitudinally evaluated the frequency of thyroid anomalies and autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD) in patients with chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (22q11.2DS). The results showed that 21.9% of patients with 22q11.2DS developed ATD before 18 years of age, with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis being the most common. Additionally, ultrasound scans were found to be useful in detecting thyroid abnormalities in these patients.

Increased trend of thyroid cancer in childhood over the last 30 years in EU countries: a call for the pediatric surgeon

Claudio Spinelli et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the epidemiological data of thyroid cancer cases in the pediatric population in Europe from 1991-2012. The findings showed an increasing prevalence of thyroid cancer in females aged 10-19, particularly in Belarus, Cyprus, and Italy. Italy also exhibited a higher incidence compared to other European countries, according to data from GLOBOCAN 2020.

How immunodeficiency can lead to malignancy

Sung-Yun Pai et al.

Summary: Immunodeficiency may lead to infections, immune dysregulation, and increased cancer risk. In individuals with HIV infection or certain IEIs, CD4+ T-cell lymphopenia can predispose to aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Profound T-cell lymphopenia or dysfunction in immunodeficient individuals may also increase the risk of cancers related to oncogenic viruses.
