Endocrine disruptors and endometriosis

Sudipta Dutta et al.

Summary: Endometriosis is a hormone-dependent inflammatory gynecological disease characterized by the presence of endometrium outside the uterus, leading to chronic pelvic pain and infertility. Environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins, bisphenol A, and phthalates have been linked to the pathogenesis of endometriosis. Further understanding of the molecular mechanisms and developing therapeutic strategies to mitigate the effects of these EDCs are needed.

The interplay between androgens and the immune response in polycystic ovary syndrome

Sania Shabbir et al.

Summary: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a genetic disorder with a complex etiology. It is primarily characterized by hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance, which lead to physiological dysfunctions and chronic inflammation. This review paper explores the relationship between androgens, the immune response, and their contribution to PCOS.

miEAA 2023: updates, new functional microRNA sets and improved enrichment visualizations

Ernesto Aparicio-Puerta et al.

Summary: miEAA is a flexible and comprehensive miRNA enrichment analysis tool based on direct and indirect miRNA annotation. It includes 19 miRNA repositories, covering 10 different organisms and 139,399 functional categories. miEAA has added information on the cellular context of miRNAs, isomiRs, and high-confidence miRNAs to improve the accuracy of results. It also improves the representation of aggregated results, including interactive Upset plots. Finally, miEAA demonstrates its functionality in the context of ageing and emphasizes the importance of carefully considering the miRNA input list. miEAA is free to use and publicly available.

Plasma microRNAs can be a potential diagnostic biomarker for endometriosis

Zhihong Zhuo et al.

Summary: In this study, differential expression of circular miRNA was identified between normal women and women with endometriosis through literature review and analysis of miRNA data from databases. Functional enrichment analysis indicated that these miRNAs may be involved in multiple pathways related to endometriosis. The results suggested that these four miRNAs could serve as prognostic markers in endometriosis.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in the Environment: Occupational and Exposure Events, Effects on Human Health and Fertility

Luigi Montano et al.

Summary: In the last decade, there has been renewed attention in the scientific community on the presence and potential risks of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) due to their continued presence in the environment and workplaces. PCBs primarily enter the human body through ingestion of contaminated foods, followed by inhalation and dermal contact. These pollutants are found in building materials and electrical equipment, with the highest contamination levels in e-waste recycling sites. Studies have reported environmental and occupational exposure to PCBs, with workers showing increased blood PCB concentrations. Epidemiological studies suggest that high concentrations of PCBs are associated with various health outcomes including neuropsychological deficits, dementia, immune system dysfunctions, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. PCBs bioaccumulation also affects fertility and reproductive systems. Further research is needed to understand the effects of low-level PCBs exposure in workplaces and specific indoor environments.

Role of endometrial microRNAs in repeated implantation failure (mini-review)

Sepide Goharitaban et al.

Summary: This review discusses the potential use of endometrial miRNAs as noninvasive biomarkers to predict the implantation and reproductive ability of the endometrium during in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles. Previous studies have shown that certain miRNA levels in the endometrium are associated with implantation potential and pregnancy outcomes. This review introduces the possibility of using endometrial miRNAs as noninvasive biomarkers in assisted reproductive technology (ART) cycles to determine the optimal time for implantation.

BMI modifies the association between dietary intake and serum levels of PCBs

Tuo Lan et al.

Summary: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants that have carcinogenic, neurotoxic, and endocrine disrupting effects. This study found a positive association between dietary intake of PCBs and serum levels, with an effect modification by body mass index (BMI). Older individuals and non-Hispanic participants tended to have higher levels of Sigma 37-PCB in serum.

Summary: This study analyzed data from the German HELPcB cohort to determine the human half-lives of different PCB congeners, revealing a range of half-lives and structure-related differences. The research provides valid half-life data for a large number of PCB congeners and suggests the feasibility of estimating former occupational exposures from current PCB levels.

Summary: Exposure to PCBs can occur through various routes, with dietary intake considered the primary pathway for the general population, though recent studies suggest an increasing contribution from indoor inhalation exposure. More data is needed to accurately assess population exposures, particularly for indoor air and dietary intake.

Characterization of micro-RNA in women with different ovarian reserve

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the potential role of miRNAs as biomarkers for identifying women with different ovarian reserves, and found that the abundance level of miRNAs is significantly correlated with the AMH level. Specific miRNAs were identified as having predictive value for changes in AMH levels, suggesting their potential as diagnostic tools for ovarian reserve assessment.
