Impact of surface free energy on two-dimensional crystallization

Jiarong Yao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between surface free energy and crystallization tendency of 2D organic crystals, and proposes a surface free energy anisotropy factor to measure this tendency. Two organic compounds were studied, and the one with a larger surface free energy anisotropy factor showed a higher tendency for 2D crystallization.

Thiazolylazopyrazoles as Nonsymmetric Bis-Heteroaryl Azo Switches: High-Yield Visible-Light Photoisomerization and Increased Z-Isomer Stability by o-Carbonylation

Tongtong Dang et al.

Summary: In this study, thiazolylazopyrazoles were reported as nonsymmetric bis-heteroaryl azo switches, which combine the visible-light switching character of the thiazole ring and the ease of o-substitution of the pyrazole ring. These switches can achieve (near-)quantitative visible-light isomerization in both directions and have long Z-isomer thermal half-lives of several days. Additionally, o-carbonylation of the pyrazole ring remarkably stabilizes the Z isomers through attractive intramolecular interactions.

Photoresponsive metal-organic polyhedra in metal-organic frameworks: Achieving real responsiveness

Sheng-Tao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a new type of photoresponsive metal-organic polyhedra (PMOP) with pendant azobenzene units was successfully synthesized and dispersed into a metal-organic framework (MOF), resulting in improved CO2 uptake and controllability. Visible light allows CO2 molecules to freely enter the nanospace of PMOP, while ultraviolet light prevents their entrance. Additionally, UV/visible light irradiation enables the reversible cis-/trans-isomerization of the azobenzene groups in PMOP. The adsorption variation of CO2 captured by the PMOP@MOF composite under light is 15.5%, significantly higher than that of bulk PMOP (5.9%). These findings provide insights into the potential of PMOPs and inspire the development of efficient strategies for controlling adsorption processes.

Co-Harvest Phase-Change Enthalpy and Isomerization Energy for High-Energy Heat Output by Controlling Crystallization of Alkyl-Grafted Azobenzene Molecules

Jian Gao et al.

Summary: This study reports optically triggered phase change in two series of asymmetrically alkylgrafted azobenzene (Azo-g) compounds. Three exothermic modes were designed to utilize crystallization enthalpy and photothermal energy. Azo-g showed high heat output by synchronously releasing crystallization enthalpy and photothermal energy over a wide temperature range. A distributed energy utilization and delivery system was fabricated to achieve a temperature increase of 6.6℃ at a temperature of -8℃. The findings provide insights into the selective utilization of latent heat and isomerization energy through molecular optimization of crystallization and isomerization processes.

Siyu Sheng et al.

Summary: The study investigates a solar phase-change material (SPCM) composed of expanded graphite (EG)/paraffin/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) that can effectively collect and store solar energy for anti-icing/de-icing purposes. The SPCM surface demonstrates excellent anti-icing/de-icing properties, maintaining a high de-icing rate and long freeze-delay time even at ultra-low temperatures. This research provides a promising approach for utilizing solar energy in anti-icing/de-icing applications.
