A Novel Application of Photocatalysis: A UV-LED Photocatalytic Device for Controlling Diurnal Evaporative Fuel Vapor Emissions from Automobiles

Catherine B. B. Almquist et al.

Summary: This study investigated a novel application of photocatalysis to reduce diurnal evaporative fuel vapor emissions from automobiles. A light-weight annulus photocatalytic device was designed and characterized for its performance in oxidizing the emissions. The results showed that the UV LED photocatalytic device was capable of reducing the emissions by 60 wt%, but the presence of high concentrations of light alkanes and aromatic fuel vapors may limit its longevity.

Photocatalytic ceramic membrane: Effect of the illumination intensity and distribution

Shuyana A. Heredia Deba et al.

Summary: The impact of UV light intensity and distribution on the semiconductor surface during the degradation of organic compounds in water was studied using a mono and a multi-LED lamp. The electromagnetic radiation profile on the surface of the membrane was scanned and evaluated. Comparing two lamp configurations, a 20% higher degradation was achieved with the most homogeneous light distribution. The surface reaction constant increased linearly with the irradiation intensity for the most homogeneous illumination distribution.

Radiation modeling and performance evaluation of a UV-LED photocatalytic reactor for water treatment

Agustina Manassero et al.

Summary: This article presents a photocatalytic reactor illuminated by UV-LED. The reactor is an annular, packed-bed reactor filled with TiO2-coated glass rings. Internal and external irradiation is utilized to minimize dark zones. A three-dimensional model is developed to describe the distribution of photon absorption rate inside the reactor, using Monte Carlo method to solve the radiation model. Simulation results are validated with experiments, predicting the impact of catalyst film thickness and illumination conditions on radiation distribution and total photon absorption rate. Additionally, degradation assays of clofibric acid were performed to evaluate the performance under different illumination conditions using quantum efficiency parameter.

Recent advances, influencing factors, and future research prospects using photocatalytic process for produced water treatment

Kingsley Tamunokuro Amakiri et al.

Summary: Oilfield-produced water is a major by-product of oil and gas extraction operations, often containing severe toxicity and posing potential threats to health, safety, and the environment, requiring efficient treatment technologies such as photocatalysis. However, there is limited understanding of its application to treating oilfield-produced water with complex and highly variable water composition, necessitating further research to address this challenge.

A Review of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)-Based Photocatalyst for Oilfield-Produced Water Treatment

Hadi Nugraha Cipta Dharma et al.

Summary: Oilfield produced water (OPW) is a major environmental concern due to the high concentration of dissolved organic pollutants. Photodegradation using photocatalysts, particularly titanium dioxide (TiO2), is considered a promising technology for the sustainable treatment of OPW. However, the photoactivity of TiO2 is limited due to its wide band gap and low quantum field. Modification approaches have been explored to enhance the photocatalytic performance of TiO2, improve charge carrier transfer, prevent recombination, and enhance visible light response.

Identifying Key Design Criteria for Large-Scale Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation from Engineering and Economic Perspectives

Cui Ying Toe et al.

Summary: This article discusses and evaluates the design and scale-up of photocatalytic reactors from an economic perspective. It finds that a photocatalytic slurry system is more cost-effective in producing H-2 fuel compared to a panel photoreactor system. It also suggests that increasing photon conversion efficiency and considering factors such as photocatalyst reusability and cost reduction can significantly impact the overall cost.

Recent advances in heterogeneous micro-photoreactors for wastewater treatment application

Komal Shukla et al.

Summary: Micro-photoreactor is a miniaturized photoreactor that combines the advantages of microfluidics with traditional photoreactors, allowing for efficient wastewater treatment. It requires small quantities of photocatalyst material and offers features like high surface to volume ratio and better control of reaction parameters. The thin layer of photocatalyst in the microreactor enables less photon loss and uniform light distribution, making it suitable for photocatalytic wastewater treatment applications.
