The Electronic Effects of 3-Methoxycarbonylcoumarin Substituents on Spectral, Antioxidant, and Protein Binding Properties

Jelena Vasic et al.

Summary: The structural characteristics of four 3-methoxycarbonylcoumarin derivatives with different substituents were investigated using NMR, IR, and UV-VIS spectroscopies and density functional theory methods. The electronic effects of the substituents significantly influenced the aromatic ring directly attached to them. The study also showed the importance of electronic effects on the protein binding affinities and antioxidant properties of coumarin derivatives.

Computational Chemistry as a Conceptual Game Changer: Understanding the Role of London Dispersion in Hexaphenylethane Derivatives (Gomberg Systems)

Soeren Roesel et al.

Summary: This article provides a personal perspective on the history of hexaphenylethane (HPE) and its derivatives, discussing both the successful and unsuccessful attempts at interpreting experimental and computational data. The study of HPE has played a significant role in the development of chemical theory, advancing concepts such as mesomeric resonance and challenging traditional views on substituent effects. Understanding the stability and instability of HPE and its derivatives has important implications for the appreciation of London dispersion forces and the analytical power of computational chemistry.

Flexible homogeneous hydroformylation: on-demand tuning of aldehyde branching with a cyclic fluorophosphite ligand

Malek Y. S. Ibrahim et al.

Summary: This study successfully tunes the regioselectivity of aldehydes through homogeneous hydroformylation of olefins using the same catalyst system. By using a bulky cyclic monofluorophosphite ligand, the researchers achieved high activity and tunable selectivity, allowing for on-demand tuning of linear and branched aldehydes without the need for ligand/catalyst alteration. The catalyst also exhibited high regioselectivity when starting from internal olefins.
