Mechanism of room-temperature superplasticity in ultrafine-grained Al-Zn alloys

Zizheng Song et al.

Summary: Superplastic deformation of polycrystalline materials is usually achieved by diffusion-assisted grain boundary sliding at high temperatures. Recent research has shown that room-temperature superplasticity can be achieved in ultrafine-grained Al-Zn based alloys, but the underlying mechanism is still unclear. This study utilized in-situ tensile straining, electron microscopy characterization, and atomistic density functional theory simulation to reveal that the superplasticity at room temperature is achieved by grain boundary sliding and grain rotation, facilitated by the continuous diffusion of Zn. The diffusion of Zn atoms from grains to grain boundaries forms a Zn nanolayer, acting as a solid lubricant to lower the energy barrier of grain boundary sliding.

Stabilizing Supersaturation with Extreme Grain Refinement in Spinodal Aluminum Alloys

Wei Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, it is discovered that spinodal decomposition in supersaturated Al(Zn) solid solutions can be inhibited with straining-induced extreme grain refinement. The refined supersaturated grains at the nanoscale resist their spinodal decomposition through relaxed grain boundaries and reduced lattice defects. As grains are refined below 10 nm, the decomposition is completely inhibited due to blocked atomic diffusion by the stable Schwarz crystal structure with vacancy-free grains. Extreme grain refinement offers a general approach to stabilize supersaturated phases and broaden compositional windows for property modulation of alloys.

Room-temperature-deformation-induced chemical short-range ordering in a supersaturated ultrafine-grained Al-Zn alloy

Summary: This study reports chemical short-range ordering in an ultrafine-grained supersaturated Al-Zn alloy introduced by severe plastic deformation at room temperature, resulting in an ordered L1(0)-AlZn structure with dimensions of 1-3 nm. Vacancies introduced by severe plastic deformation are believed to play an important role in the formation of chemical short-range ordering at room temperature.

Developing age-hardenable Al-Zr alloy by ultra-severe plastic deformation: Significance of supersaturation, segregation and precipitation on hardening and electrical conductivity

Abbas Mohammadi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the use of ultra-high plastic deformation and subsequent aging to enhance the mechanical properties and thermal stability of Al-Zr alloys. The ultra-SPD leads to the formation of supersaturated solid solution in aluminum and the subsequent aging results in unique precipitation of AlZr precipitates at grain boundaries and coherent metastable Al3Zr precipitates within grain interiors. The combination of these microstructural features contributes to a significant increase in hardness, thermal stability, and reasonable electrical conductivity of the alloy.

Summary: Equiaxial-nanograined pure aluminum with an average grain size of 65 nm was successfully fabricated through the combined plastic deformation process of cold rolling and cryogenic high pressure torsion. The aluminum exhibited high strength and superior thermal stability, mainly due to the presence of high angle grain boundaries and grain boundary relaxation.

Suppressing atomic diffusion with the Schwarz crystal structure in supersaturated Al-Mg alloys

W. Xu et al.

Summary: High atomic diffusivity in metals allows for significant adjustability of their structure and properties by tailoring diffusional processes. The Schwarz crystal structure can effectively suppress atomic diffusion in a supersaturated aluminum-magnesium alloy, inhibiting the precipitation and coarsening of diffusion-controlled intermetallics. This may lead to useful properties for high-temperature applications.
