Desaturases and elongases involved in long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis in aquatic animals: From genes to functions

O. Monroig et al.

Summary: Traditional belief holds that marine microbes are the primary producers of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) in marine ecosystems. However, recent studies have challenged this belief by discovering that many aquatic animals also have the enzyme machinery necessary for de novo biosynthesis of PUFA and LC-PUFA. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the genes and proteins involved in LC-PUFA biosynthesis in aquatic animals, particularly invertebrates and fish. It concludes that invertebrates and fish have different, yet active, LC-PUFA biosynthetic gene networks that result from complex evolutionary processes and functional diversification.

Regulation of Δ6Fads2 Gene Involved in LC-PUFA Biosynthesis Subjected to Fatty Acid in Large Yellow Croaker (Larimichthys crocea) and Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Jie Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the regulatory role of fads2 in response to fatty acids in large yellow croaker and rainbow trout. The results showed that linseed oil (LO) and soybean oil (SO) significantly increased fads2 expression. In vitro experiments revealed that CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein alpha (C/EBP alpha) and GATA binding protein 3 (GATA3) played important roles in the transcriptional regulation of fads2. Furthermore, the replacement of fish oil (FO) by LO and SO increased fads2 expression through a C/EBP alpha and GATA3 dependent mechanism in both species. This study provides insights into the regulatory mechanisms of fads2 expression and LC-PUFA biosynthesis.

Climate impacts on the landings of Indian oil sardine over the south-eastern Arabian Sea

Faseela Hamza et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between Indian oil sardine landings and environmental factors, indicating the impacts of temperature, salinity, ocean upwelling, and mixed layer depth on the catches. Climate change may have significant implications for the Indian oil sardine fishery.

Genomic investigations provide insights into the mechanisms of resilience to heterogeneous habitats of the Indian Ocean in a pelagic fish

Wilson Sebastian et al.

Summary: The study revealed adaptive genetic variation in Indian oil sardine in response to different habitats of the Indian Ocean, with samples from the Gulf of Oman showing significant divergence from other regions. SNP allele-environment correlation indicated candidate loci potentially associated with environmental adaptation. Additionally, larval dispersal modelling showed high dispersal rates along the southwest coast of India.

Transcriptomic dataset for Sardina pilchardus: Assembly, annotation, and expression of nine tissues

Jorge Langa et al.

Summary: European sardine is a planktonic small pelagic fish with great nutritional and economic value, yet little is known about the molecular mechanisms involved in protein and lipid synthesis in this species. Researchers collected nine tissues of sardine and reconstructed the transcriptome to reveal their expression patterns, providing important data for understanding the genetic make-up of this species.

Evolution and Functional Characteristics of the Novel elovl8 That Play Pivotal Roles in Fatty Acid Biosynthesis

Shouxiang Sun et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Elovl8 is not unique to teleosts, but has a wide phylogenetic distribution. Through the use of CRISPR/Cas9 technology, it was demonstrated that Elovl8a and Elovl8b play important roles in fatty acid elongation. Further experiments showed the substrate preferences and capabilities of these enzymes in fatty acid biosynthesis.
