Future Ko spacing diaeresis ppen-Geiger climate zones over Southeast Asia using CMIP6 Multimodel Ensemble

Mohammed Magdy Hamed et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential climate zone shifts in Southeast Asia (SEA) under different shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs). The analysis uses 19 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) global climate models (GCMs) to reconstruct the climate zones in SEA and assesses their skill in classifying observed climate. The selected best-performing models are used to project future climate zone shifts for different SSP scenarios. The results indicate that climatic shifting is influenced by factors such as minimum temperature increase and rainfall change, with a higher occurrence under high emission scenarios. The generated maps of future climate zones can help identify ecologically vulnerable areas in SEA due to climate change.

Climate Model Code Genealogy and Its Relation to Climate Feedbacks and Sensitivity

Peter Kuma et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive reconstruction of the code genealogy of 167 atmospheric models, GCMs, and ESMs from CMIP3, CMIP5, and CMIP6. It identifies 12 main model families and proposes weighting methods based on family and ancestry to reduce the effect of model structural dependence. The study also analyzes differences in climate sensitivity, feedbacks, forcing, and global mean near-surface air temperature among model families.

Emergent constraints on future precipitation changes

Hideo Shiogama et al.

Summary: Future projections of global mean precipitation change have larger uncertainties compared to temperature change projections. This study shows that by using observational constraints, the upper bound of precipitation change under a medium greenhouse gas concentration scenario is reduced. The study also finds correlations between precipitation change and temperature trends, as well as recent precipitation trends. The observationally constrained ranges of precipitation change can provide reliable information for impact assessments.

Global Changes in Terrestrial Vegetation and Continental Climate During the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum

Vera A. Korasidis et al.

Summary: A compilation of terrestrial pollen and spores records across the Paleocene-Eocene transition at 38 sites globally revealed significant differences in PETM palynofloras compared to those in the late Paleocene or early Eocene post-PETM. Inferred paleoclimatic conditions indicated varying diversity of NLRs at different latitudes during the Paleocene and PETM periods.

Correlation Between Cloud Adjustments and Cloud Feedbacks Responsible for Larger Range of Climate Sensitivities in CMIP6

Nicholas J. Lutsko et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reasons behind the very high Equilibrium Climate Sensitivities (ECSs) of over 5 degrees C in several of the latest generation of climate models. The explanation depends on how the radiative forcing from CO2 (F) is calculated. In previous model generations, F is anticorrelated with models' climate feedback, dampening the range of ECS, but in the newest generation of models, F is positively correlated with the feedback, increasing the range of ECS. These relationships are driven by correlations between F and the cloud adjustments to the forcing, which also change sign between the model generations. Most of the intergenerational differences seem to come from models originally derived from a small number of modeling centers, indicating the importance of understanding the cloud adjustments in these models for the greater spread of ECS in the latest generation of climate models.

Choice of climate data affects the performance and interpretation of species distribution models

Umarfarooq A. Abdulwahab et al.

Summary: The choice of climate data can affect the performance of climate-based species distribution models (CSDMs), with different datasets leading to overprediction or underestimation of species distributions. Therefore, the effects of different climate data should be considered when developing and applying climate models.

The importance of internal climate variability in climate impact projections

Kevin Schwarzwalda et al.

Summary: Uncertainty in climate projections is driven by scenario uncertainty, intermodel uncertainty, and internal variability. In this study, we used large ensembles from seven coupled general circulation models to partition the climate uncertainty in dose-response models. We found that internal variability plays a significant role in certain projections, particularly in early 21st-century mortality projections. Therefore, we recommend considering uncertainty due to internal variability in temperature-driven impact predictions.

An Updated Assessment of Near-Surface Temperature Change From 1850: The HadCRUT5 Data Set

Summary: HadCRUT5 is a new version of a global surface temperature data set, incorporating sea-surface temperature and land near-surface air temperature measurements. Two variants are produced for different applications, with the combination of revised input data sets and statistical analysis resulting in greater warming of the global average over the entire record period.

Making climate projections conditional on historical observations

Aurelien Ribes et al.

Summary: Many studies have attempted to constrain climate projections based on recent observations, with limited impact until recently. By using a new climate model ensemble, improved observations, and a new statistical method, uncertainty in estimates of past and future human-induced warming has been reduced. Historical observations have narrowed uncertainty on projected future warming by approximately 50%, and previous lower estimates of 21st century warming can now be excluded.

Is New Always Better? Frontiers in Global Climate Datasets for Modeling Treeline Species in the Himalayas

Maria Bobrowski et al.

Summary: This study compares the global climate datasets Worldclim and Chelsa and evaluates their suitability for ecological modeling studies, especially in regions with limited data availability. Results show that Chelsa-based models outperform Worldclim-based models under current climatic conditions, but caution against the potential drawbacks in using climate data for high-altitude treeline species modeling and future projections. Collaboration between climate scientists and ecologists is emphasized to enhance the quality of climate-based ecological models at meso- to local-scales.

Climate sensitivity indices and their relation with projected temperature change in CMIP6 models

Linnea L. Huusko et al.

Summary: TCR is better correlated with model projected temperature change in current climate models, while ECS shows superior predictive power in areas with slow warming in the latter half of the 21st century. Historical forcing has predictive power for past temperature evolution but not future projections. Total forcing weakly correlates with ECS over the 20th century.
