The study confirms that male sex is a predisposing factor for severe outcomes of COVID-19, independent of age and comorbidities. COVID-19 specific mechanisms may contribute to this mortality discrepancy between males and females.

Risk of hospitalization and death for healthcare workers with COVID-19 in nine European countries, January 2020-January 2021
