Trace elements in farmland soils and crops, and probabilistic health risk assessment in areas influenced by mining activity in Ecuador

Paola Romero-Crespo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the pollution level of trace elements in farmland soil and crops collected in one of Ecuador's most important gold mining areas. The results showed that the concentration of certain elements in the soil exceeded the quality guidelines for agricultural soils, while the concentration in crops exceeded the maximum permissible levels set by FAO. The health risk assessment revealed that inhabitants of the study area are exposed to developing carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects due to long-term consumption of food with high trace elements.

Comprehensive assessment of pollution indices, sources apportionment and ecological risk mapping of heavy metals in agricultural soils of Raebareli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, employing a GIS approach

Ajay Neeraj et al.

Summary: This study investigates the pollution status of heavy metals in agricultural soils in the Raebareli district, finding varying degrees of contamination at different sites, with the Uchahaar site being the most polluted and the Bacharawa site being the least contaminated. The results indicate that the northern part of Raebareli bears a high pollution load and ecological risk in terms of heavy metal pollution. This study provides valuable information for policymakers to develop appropriate plans to control pollution within the agricultural sector.

Sample Preparation and Analytical Techniques in the Determination of Trace Elements in Food: A Review

Leina El Hosry et al.

Summary: Every human being needs around 20 essential elements to maintain proper physiological processes. Some trace elements are essential for the human body, while others have undetermined biological functions and are considered contaminants. Pollution with trace elements can affect biological functions and cause illnesses. This review provides an overview of commonly used methods and techniques in trace element analysis of food.

Copper mining in the eastern Amazon: an environmental perspective on potentially toxic elements

Suellen Nunes de Araujo et al.

Summary: This study compared the concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in copper tailings and surrounding soils, finding that the levels of Co, Cu, and Ni in the tailings area exceeded prevention values and soil quality reference values. However, according to the Pollution Load Index (PLI) and Potential Ecological Risk Index (RI), the tailings area was considered unpolluted with low potential ecological risk.

Human health risk assessment of lead (Pb) through the environmental-food pathway

Rajat Nag et al.

Summary: This study investigates the risk of lead (Pb) exposure to humans through the food chain using a GIS-based survey and probabilistic quantitative risk assessment. The findings show that the risk of Pb exposure through selected food products is low to moderate, highlighting the importance of limiting Pb concentrations in agricultural soil to mitigate the risk.

Accumulation of As and Pb in vegetables grown in agricultural soils polluted by historical mining in Zacatecas, Mexico

Silvia Salas-Munoz et al.

Summary: This study assessed the accumulation of arsenic and lead in vegetables grown in agricultural soils polluted by historical mining activities in Zacatecas, Mexico. The results showed that the concentrations of arsenic and lead in the vegetables exceeded national and international standards, indicating a health risk. The soil was also classified as polluted, making it unsuitable for agricultural use.

Physical and chemical characterization of sediments from an Andean river exposed to mining and agricultural activities: The Moquegua River, Peru

Luis de los Santos Valladares et al.

Summary: This study analyzes sediments in an Andean river that are impacted by both natural conditions and human activities. The analysis reveals the presence of common soil constituents and chemical residuals from fertilizers, as well as higher concentrations of macronutrients and organic components in agricultural and urban areas. The study also detects elevated levels of arsenic minerals, possibly influenced by anthropogenic activity.

Hazardous enrichment of toxic elements in soils and olives in the urban zone of Lavrio, Greece, a legacy, millennia-old silver/lead mining area and related health risk assessment

Vasileios Antoniadis et al.

Summary: In this study, the levels of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soil, weeds, and olives in the Greek town of Lavrio were measured, revealing high concentrations of seven PTEs in the soil. X-ray absorption analysis showed the association of these PTEs with specific minerals and substances. The transfer of PTEs to weeds was low, and the levels of cadmium and lead in olives exceeded the EU limits. The study highlighted the urgent need for ecofriendly remediation in Lavrio and could serve as a valuable reference for similar industrial areas.

A global meta-analysis of heavy metal(loid)s pollution in soils near copper mines: Evaluation of pollution level and probabilistic health risks

Li Chen et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of the mining industry, the pollution and potential health risks of heavy metal(loid)s in soils near copper mining sites have become a significant concern worldwide. This study evaluated the pollution levels and ecological risks of eight heavy metal(loid)s in soil samples from 102 copper mining sites around the world. The findings suggest that copper, cadmium, and arsenic are the most heavily polluted and pose the highest risks, highlighting the importance of prioritizing their control measures.

Global predictions of primary soil salinization under changing climate in the 21st century

Amirhossein Hassani et al.

Summary: Excess salt accumulation in the root zone causes soil salinization, which affects soil health, biodiversity, and food security. The authors used machine learning algorithms to predict global soil salinization under changing climate in the 21st century, identifying hotspots in drylands such as South America, southern and western Australia, Mexico, southwest United States, and South Africa. Conversely, they project a decrease in soil salinity in northwest United States, the Horn of Africa, Eastern Europe, Turkmenistan, and west Kazakhstan in response to climate change.
