Diagnosis and Treatment of Acute Coronary Syndromes A Review

Deepak L. Bhatt et al.

Summary: This review discusses the current evidence on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, management, and prognosis of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). ACS is a sudden reduction in blood supply to the heart and includes ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), non-STEMI (NSTEMI), and unstable angina. Each year, more than 7 million people are diagnosed with ACS worldwide. Prompt intervention, such as primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for STEMI patients and invasive coronary angiography with revascularization for high-risk NSTE-ACS patients, is associated with reduced mortality.

Validation of ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM Diagnostic Codes for Identifying Patients with Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest in a National Health Insurance Claims Database

Ming-Jen Tsai et al.

Summary: This study developed and validated case definition algorithms for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) based on ICD diagnostic codes and billing codes for NHI reimbursement, providing an important reference for future OHCA studies using the Taiwan NHI database.

Myocardial Infarction with and without ST-segment Elevation: a Contemporary Reappraisal of Similarities and Differences

Andreas Mitsis et al.

Summary: Understanding the similarities and differences between myocardial infarction with or without ST-segment elevation is crucial for proper patient management. While the incidence of STEMI and NSTEMI varies, short-term prognosis is worse for STEMI but long-term outcomes are comparable. Management differs, with immediate reperfusion for STEMIs and risk stratification for NSTEMIs.

Effectiveness of hospital emergency department regionalization and categorization policy on appropriate patient emergency care use: a nationwide observational study in Taiwan

Chih-Yuan Lin et al.

Summary: The study aimed to examine the effects of hospital ED regionalization policy and categorization of hospital emergency capability policy on patient-appropriate ED use in Taiwan. While the policies did increase emergency care accessibility, they did not have a significant effect on patient-appropriate ED use rate. Further research is needed for data-driven policymaking improvements.

Validation of novel identification algorithms for major adverse cardiovascular events in a Japanese claims database

Daisuke Shima et al.

Summary: This study developed and validated novel algorithms to identify major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) from Japanese claims databases. By combining specific drug and medical procedure data, the algorithms significantly increased the positive predictive values (PPVs) for each event, improving the accuracy and sensitivity of the algorithms.

Impact of the ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM transition on the incidence of severe maternal morbidity among delivery hospitalizations in the United States

Amy Metcalfe et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of transition from the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, to the Tenth Revision coding systems on severe maternal morbidity incidence in US hospital discharge data. The results showed a significant decrease in severe maternal morbidity incidence following the transition, indicating a sudden and clinically meaningful change associated with the coding shift.

Effect of ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM coding system transition on identification of common conditions: An interrupted time series analysis

Meng-Chen Hsu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of diagnostic coding system transition on the identification of common conditions recorded in Taiwan's national claims database. Results showed that less than half of the 32 conditions studied had a smooth transition between the ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM coding systems, researchers should be aware of inconsistencies in coding definitions.
