Fiber-to-The-Room (FTTR) Technologies for the 5th Generation Fixed Network (F5G) and Beyond

Xiang Liu et al.

Summary: This article reviews a series of innovative optical network technologies for the 5th generation fixed network (F5G) and beyond, with the aim of supporting enhanced fixed broadband, full fiber connection, and guaranteed reliable experience. It particularly describes the emerging fiber-to-the-room (FTTR) technology that provides telecom-quality Wi-Fi experience and premium home broadband connectivity. Proof-of-concept demonstrations of fast seamless Wi-Fi roaming, dynamic Wi-Fi power management, centralized traffic scheduling, and AI-enabled network slicing are presented. The FTTR-enabled coordination of Wi-Fi access points achieves a throughput increase of up to 96% and reduces roaming latency by 20 ms. Finally, the future network evolution beyond F5G is discussed.

Optical Performance Monitoring of Multiple Parameters in Future Optical Networks

Dawei Wang et al.

Summary: Optical performance monitoring (OPM) is essential for managing future optical fiber communication networks, providing feedback on physical layer states to enable better network planning and diagnosis. By utilizing low-bandwidth coherent receivers and local lasers, a multiparameter OPM at intermediate nodes can scan optical spectrum, measure power, wavelength, OSNR, and other parameters for improved network performance.
