Switchable Anomalous Hall Effects in Polar-Stacked 2D Antiferromagnet MnBi2Te4

Tengfei Cao et al.

Summary: Based on symmetry analyses and density-functional calculations, this study explores the emergence of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in antiferromagnetic MnBi2Te4 films assembled by polar layer stacking. Breaking PT symmetry in an MnBi2Te4 bilayer produces a magnetoelectric effect and a spontaneous AHE switchable by electric polarization. Reversible polarization at one of the interfaces in a three-layer MnBi2Te4 film drives a metal-insulator transition, as well as switching between the AHE and quantum AHE (QAHE). Engineering interlayer polarization in a three-layer MnBi2Te4 film allows converting MnBi2Te4 from a trivial insulator to a Chern insulator.

A multiferroic vanadium phosphide monolayer with ferromagnetic half-metallicity and topological Dirac states

Xiaoyu Xuan et al.

Summary: This study reports the first-principles prediction of a dynamically and thermally stable tetragonal vanadium phosphide (t-VP) monolayer with desirable properties such as ferroelasticity, ferromagnetism, half-metallicity, and topological Dirac states. The research also predicts a multiferroic t-CrN monolayer with high Curie temperature but weak coupling to in-plane ferroelasticity. The results suggest that a tetragonal 2D lattice can serve as a robust atomic-scale scaffold for creating fascinating electronic and magnetic properties through a suitable combination of chemical elements.

Summary: In this study, a machine learning model called TMINN is developed to predict the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of 2D metal-organic framework (MOF) materials. The well-trained TMINN model captures the correlation between geometrical configurations and MAEs, and successfully identifies unreported ferromagnetic MOFs with large MAEs. Robust Quantum Anomalous Hall States in Monolayer and Few-Layer TiTe

Xiaoyu Xuan et al.

Summary: Using first-principles calculations, a robust quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state with high Curie temperature and sizable band gap is predicted in monolayer TiTe. The outstanding properties originate from the large size of Te atom facilitating ferromagnetic kinetic exchange with neighboring Ti atoms, and strong spin-orbit coupling leading to the creation of QAH state by adding a mass term to the Dirac half-semimetal state.

Ferroelasticity in Two-Dimensional Tetragonal Materials

Xiaoyu Xuan et al.

Summary: This study identifies 65 monolayers exhibiting in-plane ferroelasticity using high-throughput computation and first-principles calculations. The molecular orbital theory analysis reveals that ferroelastic distortion arises when both M-d/X-p and M-d/M-d couplings are weak. The research team has developed a one-dimensional descriptor that accurately predicts the difference between ferroelastics and nonferroelastics. Furthermore, they have found 11 compounds that exhibit both ferroelasticity and magnetism, raising the prospects of developing 2D ferroelasticity-based multiferroics.

Anisotropy-induced phase transitions in an intrinsic half-Chern insulator Ni2I2

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a unique material, an intrinsic half-Chern insulator (HCI) in a Ni2I2 monolayer, which exhibits 100% spin-polarized topologically nontrivial edge states. The material can transition between a half semiconductor and a combined state of a half metal and an HCI under biaxial strain. The findings demonstrate that the monolayer Ni2I2 possesses ideal spintronic properties, making it suitable for spintronic devices with very high spin polarization and extremely low-power dissipation.

Two dimensional Janus Ti-trihalide monolayers with half-metallic characteristics, Mott insulator properties and tunable magnetic anisotropy

Xiaotian Fang et al.

Summary: The electronic and magnetic properties of Janus Ti2X3Y3 (X, Y = I, Br, Cl) monolayers were studied. Two types of orbital splitting were observed, corresponding to semiconducting and half-metallic states. The ground state was found to be a ferromagnetic semiconductor with in-plane magnetic anisotropy. The monolayers showed softness with a low Young's modulus and the band gap could be adjusted by in-plane biaxial strain. The magnetic anisotropy was mainly contributed by the heavy halogen elements.
