Valeria Pala et al.

Summary: The study suggests that increased Cu/Zn ratio in plasma and urine may serve as an early marker and risk factor for breast cancer development, especially within 2 years of diagnosis.

Copper induces cell death by targeting lipoylated TCA cycle proteins

Peter Tsvetkov et al.

Summary: Copper is an essential cofactor for all organisms, but excessive copper can lead to cell death. We found that copper-dependent cell death mechanism is different from known mechanisms, and it is related to mitochondrial respiration. Copper directly binds to lipoylated components of the tricarboxylic acid cycle, causing protein aggregation and loss of iron-sulfur cluster proteins, ultimately leading to cell death.

Autoimmunity to selenoprotein P predicts breast cancer recurrence

Kamil Demircan et al.

Summary: The presence of SELENOP autoantibodies in breast cancer patients is associated with poor prognosis, particularly in patients with low selenium levels. These autoantibodies may disrupt the transport function of SELENOP, leading to an increased risk of recurrence and mortality.

Connecting copper and cancer: from transition metal signalling to metalloplasia

Eva J. Ge et al.

Summary: Copper is a essential nutrient with both beneficial and toxic properties to cells. Recent progress in transition metal signaling has led to new connections between researchers from different disciplines, with potential for translating basic research into clinical therapies for diseases. The relationship between copper and cancer is particularly important, with opportunities for leveraging disease vulnerabilities through copper-dependent signaling pathways.

Copper metabolism as a unique vulnerability in cancer

Vinit C. Shanbhag et al.

Summary: Over the past 25 years, significant progress has been made in identifying and characterizing proteins that regulate the uptake, intracellular trafficking and export of copper. While copper is essential for growth and development in humans and other mammals, it is also a limiting nutrient for cancer cell growth and proliferation. Oral copper chelators have been shown to have anti-neoplastic and anti-metastatic effects in animals and humans.

Mitochondrial copper depletion suppresses triple-negative breast cancer in mice

Liyang Cui et al.

Summary: The research developed a mitochondria-targeted copper-depleting nanoparticle that effectively inhibited the growth of triple-negative breast cancer cells and improved survival rates in mouse models. By depriving copper within cancer cells, this approach induced metabolic changes and apoptosis, highlighting its potential clinical relevance.

Serum selenium, selenoprotein P and glutathione peroxidase 3 as predictors of mortality and recurrence following breast cancer diagnosis: A multicentre cohort study

Kamil Demircan et al.

Summary: Selenium is essential for the synthesis of redox active proteins and its serum status biomarkers SELENOP and GPx3 are associated with overall survival and recurrence in patients with primary invasive breast cancer. An analysis of 1996 patients showed an inverse correlation between these biomarkers and mortality, with the highest quintile associated with significantly lower hazard ratios. Triple deficiency in selenium status biomarkers was linked to the highest mortality risk, and predicting mortality based on these biomarkers outperformed traditional tumour characteristics.

Serum zinc and dietary intake of zinc in relation to risk of different breast cancer subgroups and serum levels as a marker of intake: a prospective nested case-control study

Ylva Bengtsson et al.

Summary: The study found no significant association between zinc levels in serum or pre-diagnostic diet and the risk of breast cancer, as well as no clear associations between zinc and any breast cancer characteristics. Additionally, the results suggest that serum zinc is a poor marker of zinc intake.
