MiR-99a-5p Inhibits the Proliferation and Migration of Human Retinal Microvascular Endothelial Cells by Targeting NOX4

Haizhen Yu et al.

Summary: Diabetic retinopathy is a common microvascular complication of diabetes and a leading cause of vision loss. This study explored the role of miR-99a-5p in diabetic retinopathy patients and the damage caused by high glucose in retinal microvascular endothelial cells. The expression of miR-99a-5p decreased in NPDR and PDR patients, and it could differentiate between different stages of diabetic retinopathy. MiR-99a-5p protected retinal endothelial cells from high glucose damage and may be a potential diagnostic target for diabetic retinopathy.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular mechanisms involved in hyperglycemia-induced vascular remodeling, with a focus on the role of APN and leptin. It found that hyperglycemia increases APN synthesis but decreases APN receptor expression, and upregulates leptin expression in vascular smooth muscle cells. These changes lead to increased oxidative stress and alterations in actin cytoskeleton dynamics, facilitating vascular remodeling.
