Genus-Specific Carbon Fixation Activity Measurements Reveal Distinct Responses to Oxygen among Hydrothermal Vent Campylobacteria

Jesse McNichol et al.

Summary: This study investigated the activity of three genera of Campylobacteria under different experimental conditions using radiocarbon incubations. The results showed that all three genera actively fixed CO2, but responded differently to the additions of nitrate and oxygen. Oxygen additions had the largest effect on community composition and carbon fixation rates, depending on the initial starting community.

Cultivation and metabolic insights of an uncultured clade, Bacteroidetes VC2.1 Bac22 (Candidatus Sulfidibacteriales ord. nov.), from deep-sea hydrothermal vents

Hao Leng et al.

Summary: This study obtained a high-quality metagenome-assembled genome (MAG) of Bacteroidetes VC2.1 Bac22, belonging to a newly named order called Candidatus Sulfidibacteriales. The metabolic reconstruction revealed that VC2.1 can utilize polysaccharides, protein polymers, and fatty acids as carbon sources, and obtain energy through NO/N2O reduction and polysulfide reduction. Furthermore, a new culture medium was designed based on the genome information, successfully isolating VC2.1.

How low can they go? Aerobic respiration by microorganisms under apparent anoxia

Jasmine S. Berg et al.

Summary: Oxygen is the ultimate oxidant on Earth, and microorganisms have evolved the ability to respire oxygen at extremely low levels, even in seemingly anoxic habitats. Recent advances in O-2 sensing and DNA/RNA sequencing technologies have revealed that microbial respiration of O-2 at nanomolar concentrations is ubiquitous and drives microbial activity. This discovery is changing our understanding of biogeochemical cycling in oxygen-limited environments.

Hydrodynamic disturbance controls microbial community assembly and biogeochemical processes in coastal sediments

Ya-Jou Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationships between microbial community composition and biogeochemical processes in coastal sediments exposed to varying levels of hydrodynamic disturbance. The findings suggest that hydrodynamic disturbance plays a critical role in controlling microbial community assembly and biogeochemical processes in coastal sediments. The study provides insights into the mechanisms underlying the interactions between microbial communities and biogeochemical dynamics in these unique environments.

Oxidized and Reduced Sulfur Observed by the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) Instrument Suite on the Curiosity Rover Within the Glen Torridon Region at Gale Crater, Mars

Gregory M. Wong et al.

Summary: The Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover has been studying the habitability and geological history of Gale crater on Mars since 2012. One of its main objectives was to investigate the Glen Torridon region, which has a high abundance of clay minerals that could preserve evidence of ancient habitable environments. The analysis of sulfur-bearing gases in samples from this region revealed that the majority of sulfur is in an oxidized state, with small amounts of reduced sulfur also present.

Evidence for Deposition of Chloride on Mars From Small-Volume Surface water Events into the Late Hesperian-Early Amazons

Ellen K. Leask et al.

Summary: This study examines the environmental setting and timing of large-scale chloride deposits on Mars. The results show that chloride deposits are commonly found on top of underlying topography, associated with channels and sometimes above deep craters in local topographic lows. The study also suggests that the formation of chloride deposits is related to surface water runoff, rather than deep groundwater, and meltwater from ice plays a significant role.

Summary: In this study, sediment samples from sulfur-rich environments in Iceland and Canada were analyzed for quadruple sulfur isotope values, revealing different microbial sulfur cycling processes between the sites. The results suggest the potential for quadruple sulfur isotope values to serve as biosignatures for life in sulfur-rich Martian environments. The contrasting physical and chemical characteristics of the sites support different microbial sulfur cycling processes, with implications for targeting sites for future missions to Mars.

Microaerobic Lifestyle at Nanomolar O2 Concentrations Mediated by Low-Affinity Terminal Oxidases in Abundant Soil Bacteria

Daniela Trojan et al.

Summary: The study challenges the previous hypothesis that microaerobic lifestyle is solely dependent on high-affinity terminal oxidases by demonstrating that Acidobacteria utilize low-affinity terminal oxidases to respire at low-nanomolar oxygen concentrations. This energetically efficient strategy may extend to other, yet undiscovered microbial clades, and highlights the importance of considering different oxygen utilization strategies based on the presence of terminal oxidases in bacterial genomes.
