Laser welding of tailored blanks made of Al-Si-coated 22MnB5 steel using a filler wire and a variable energy distribution laser optics

Donato Coviello et al.

Summary: Laser welding of Al-Si-coated steels for hot stamping in automotive applications is problematic due to the mixing of the coating layers inside the molten pool that weakens the resulting weld seam. In this work, a novel approach consisting in joining as-received materials using a filler wire and an innovative variable energy distribution laser optics is introduced and tested on tailor welded blanks made of 22MnB5. The results show that this method can achieve higher tensile strength and hardness compared to traditional methods.

Direct laser-filler wire welding of Al-Si coated 22MnB5 steel without removing the Al-Si coating

Wei Xu et al.

Summary: A patented laser-filler wire welding process was developed to inhibit the formation of a-ferrite and achieve high quality laser weld in Al-Si coated 22MnB5 steels without removing the coating. The use of a designated filler wire reduced Al segregation and resulted in a microstructure of full martensite with high dislocation density. The tensile strength and elongation of the welded joint increased significantly compared to welding without a filler wire.

Summary: Laser welding is considered an ideal choice for EV battery manufacturing due to its non-contact nature and precise control over heat input, but the incompatible thermos-physical properties of dissimilar materials pose a significant challenge for achieving complete metallurgical bond. This paper reviews the fundamental difficulties and latest developments in dissimilar laser welding of various materials in EV battery pack manufacturing, discussing weld microstructure, common metallurgical defects, and joint properties.

Summary: This paper proposes a method of high-strength steel thick plate welding by coupling external magnetic field and single-pass full penetration laser welding, and investigates the effect of static magnetic field on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded joint. The results show that the appropriate magnetic field can effectively suppress periodic root humps and drop-out, and improve the mechanical properties of the welded joint.

EBSD study on magnetic field altering crystal texture and grain growth during laser-hybrid welding

Chang Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, the evolution of microstructures and performance variations during laser-arc welding of 316L austenitic stainless steel were analyzed under the influence of a magnetic field. The magnetic field was found to refine austenite grains, suppress ferrite dendrite growth, and enhance the tensile strength of the material. The current, supercooling, and electromagnetic stirring were also investigated at different magnetic intensities, showing different effects on the microstructure evolution.

Influence of the magnetic field on the melting and solidification behavior of narrow-gap laser welding with filler wire

Juan Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of magnetic induction intensity on the distribution of plasma electron temperature and the behavior of the molten pool flow. The results showed that as the magnetic induction intensity increased, the high-temperature center region of the plasma expanded and the electron temperature increased from the bottom to the edge of the groove. The magnetic field had a stirring effect on the molten pool, and certain magnetic field intensities resulted in a more uniform and stable flow of the pool.

Effect of welding speed on microstructure and mechanical behavior of laser welded Al-Si coated 22MnB5 steel

Wei Xu et al.

Summary: The effect of Al-Si coating on the weld bead formation, aluminum element distribution, microstructure, and mechanical properties of laser welded 22MnB5 steel joint was studied. It was found that increasing welding speed helped to reduce the concavity depth of the weld surface. The uneven distribution of aluminum element in the fusion zone during welding process resulted in softened weld and reduced hardness.

The Significant Impact of the Characteristics of Granular Structure and Granular Bainite on the Mechanisms Contributing to Strength-Ductility Combination

X. N. Xu et al.

Summary: The study conducted a comprehensive analysis of granular structure (GS) and granular bainite (GB) in low-carbon alloy steel to elucidate their contribution to strength-ductility combination. It was found that specimens with GB exhibited higher tensile strength, ductility, and strain hardening compared to GS, with more apparent dislocation strengthening in GB and a higher volume fraction of M-A islands contributing to its strength. The improvement in ductility in GB may partly be attributed to sub-structural refinement and the presence of geometrically necessary dislocations array.
