Influence of binder systems on sintering characteristics, microstructures, and mechanical properties of PcBN composites fabricated by SPS

Shuna Chen et al.

Summary: Cubic boron nitride (cBN) is a promising abrasive and machining material due to its high hardness, thermal conductivity, wear resistance, and chemical inertness. In this study, PcBN composites with different binder systems were fabricated and their sintering behaviors and mechanical properties were investigated. The results showed that the binder formulas have a significant impact on the mechanical properties, which is related to the compactness, mechanical performances, and thermal expansion coefficient of binder phases.

Flash spark plasma sintering of zirconia nanoparticles: Electro-thermal-mechanical-microstructural simulation and scalability solutions

Charles Maniere et al.

Summary: Flash sintering is a promising method for ultra-rapid production, but faces challenges when scaling up from small samples. Stable flash conditions can be achieved for 30 mm specimens, but concentration of electric current can lead to peripheral hot spots in larger specimen sizes. The blackening effect on zirconia flash specimens serves as an indicator of the specimen's thermal history.

Effect of sintering conditions on optical and mechanical properties of MgAl2O4/Al2O3 laminated transparent composite fabricated by spark-plasma-sintering (SPS) processing

Lihong Liu et al.

Summary: A high hardness and wide band transparency were achieved in MgAl2O4/Al2O3 laminated composites fabricated by a one-step spark-plasma-sintering method. The optimized sintering conditions resulted in smaller grain sizes and higher densities of both the MgAl2O4 and Al2O3 phases, leading to improved mechanical properties and transparency.

Microwave synthesis of duplex α/β-SiAlON ceramic cutting inserts: Modifying m, n, z values, synthesis temperature, and excess Y2O3 synthesis additive

Dongbo Hong et al.

Summary: In this study, duplex alpha/beta-SiAlON ceramic cutting inserts were synthesized by microwave sintering. The effects of different parameters on the properties, such as phase assemblage, microstructure, mechanical properties, and cutting performance, were investigated. The results showed that optimal parameters led to improved performance, while excessive additives resulted in reduced performance. Ultimately, a cutting insert with optimal properties was obtained.

Summary: The study found that sintering temperature and sintering additive content have significant effects on the microstructure and thermal conductivity of SiC ceramics. Increasing sintering temperature promotes grain growth, while higher sintering additive content results in smaller grain size and lower thermal conductivity.

Anisotropic mechanical and tribological properties of SiAlON matrix composites containing different types of GNPs

Sinem Baskut et al.

Summary: In this study, four different types of GNPs with varying properties were added to SiAlON, and it was found that GNPs with high surface area, lateral dimension, aspect ratio, and low thickness provided the highest fracture toughness and best friction performance to SiAlON. The orientation of GNPs played a role in influencing the fracture toughness, with generally higher values in the in-plane direction, while the through-plane direction exhibited higher friction coefficient and hardness values.

Chip formation and wear mechanisms of SiAlON and whisker-reinforced ceramics when turning Inconel 718

Luke Osmond et al.

Summary: Inconel 718 is used in various demanding applications due to its high temperature fatigue strength, hardness, and low thermal conductivity. The study investigates the chip formation and wear mechanisms of Silicon Nitride based ceramic SiAlON and silicon carbide whiskers reinforced alumina inserts when turning solution-annealed Inconel 718. Results suggest that using SiAlON inserts at a cutting speed of 300 m/min provides the best performance in terms of tool wear, tool life, and workpiece surface finish. Chip morphology of Inconel 718 at cutting speeds above 250 m/min shows intense shear band localization, leading to chip segmentation.
