Surface multi-hazard effect of underground coal mining

Shuyue Ma et al.

Summary: Underground coal mining causes significant damage to the ecological environment. Studying the ecological vulnerability of mining areas and the development characteristics of surface multi-hazards is crucial. Using D-InSAR technology, the deformation area of a coal mine was identified, showing that mining sequence controls the spatial evolution of the deformation areas. Historical images characterized surface fissures and landslides. Particle flow numerical simulation analysis revealed three stages in the subsidence-fissure-landslide hazard chain, with fissures playing a crucial role.

Risk assessment and zoning of flood disaster in Wuchengxiyu Region, China

Cheng Gao et al.

Summary: Based on the analysis of flood disasters and their influencing factors, an index system was constructed for the Wuchengxiyu Region using physical geography and social economy data. The system included factors that induce disasters, the environment conducive to disasters, and the vulnerability of the affected areas. Weightings for each index were determined using the analytic hierarchy process, and a comprehensive evaluation index was established using weighted methods. By utilizing Geographic Information System spatial analysis techniques, a flood risk zoning model was developed for the Wuchengxiyu Region. The results identified high-risk areas in districts of Wuxi City, Changzhou City, and Jiangyin City, with different factors contributing to their vulnerability.

DEM resolution effects on machine learning performance for flood probability mapping

Mohammadtaghi Avand et al.

Summary: Assessing the impact of the spatial resolution of Digital Elevation Models on flood probability prediction accuracy, it was found that resolving the DEM alone does not significantly affect the accuracy, while factors like altitude, precipitation, and distance from the river have a considerable impact on floods in the region. The Random Forest model is more accurate in preparing Flood Probability Maps than Artificial Neural Network and Generalized Linear Model.

Flash-flood propagation susceptibility estimation using weights of evidence and their novel ensembles with multicriteria decision making and machine learning

Romulus Costache et al.

Summary: This study proposed and calculated a new flash-flood propagation susceptibility index (FFPSI) by evaluating the Flash-Flood Potential Index (FFPI) using various models. LR-WOE and AHP-WOE were the most performant models, with all models showing good performance (AUC > 0.85). The FFPSI was determined by integrating the FFPI results, revealing that over 55% of the identified valleys have high and very high values of FFPSI.

Assessment of land degradation using machine-learning techniques: A case of declining rangelands

Saleh Yousefi et al.

Summary: Using machine learning models, this study found a pronounced downward trend in rangeland quality in the Alborz Mountains in Firozkuh County, Iran, with distances from roads and livestock density being the most strongly linked factors to degradation. The results indicate that rangelands in the study area face challenges of overgrazing and early grazing, necessitating new strategies to mitigate and prevent damages.

Spatial Prediction of Future Flood Risk: An Approach to the Effects of Climate Change

Mohammadtaghi Avand et al.

Summary: This research developed a probability flood map for floods resulting from climate change in the future using FDA and ANN models. The FDA model showed the highest accuracy in preparing the flood probability map. Factors like distance from the River, altitude, slope, and rainfall were found to have the greatest impact on floods in the study area, and the future flood susceptibility maps indicated that the highest area is related to the very low class.

Environmental vulnerability and resilience: Social differentiation in short- and long-term flood impacts

Donald Houston et al.

Summary: The study found that social differentiation in flood impacts is initially small but widens over time, with socially disadvantaged groups showing less recovery. There are different patterns of social differentiation in vulnerability and resilience to flooding, with certain socially advantaged groups being most vulnerable to short-term impacts.
