Do fires discriminate? Socio-economic disadvantage, wildfire hazard exposure and the Australian 2019-20 'Black Summer' fires

Sonia Akter et al.

Summary: The study reveals a significant positive relationship between fire hazard exposure and socio-economic disadvantage in the Black Summer wildfires in Australia. The most socio-economically disadvantaged communities bore a disproportionately higher hazard exposure, and this relationship exists in inner regional, outer regional, and remote areas of New South Wales and Victoria, the two worst-hit states.

Ecological consequences of Australia's Black Summer bushfires: Managing for recovery

Christopher R. Dickman

Summary: The Australian environment has long been shaped by fire, but recent changes in the fire regime, including the unprecedented Black Summer bushfires of 2019-2020, have led to widespread ecological damage. Nearly three billion vertebrates and up to 240 trillion invertebrates were affected, with many species and ecological communities at risk of extinction. Efforts to assess and mitigate the ecological consequences of these mega-fires are hindered by challenges such as COVID-19 restrictions and decreased ecological monitoring capacity.
