Oculomotor and Perceptual Measures of Visual Motion Sensitivity in Patients With Chronic Dizziness Symptoms

Ashley Zaleski-King et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the relationship between behavioral responses to dynamic visual motion and peripheral vestibular impairment in adults with chronic dizziness symptoms. The results show that peripheral vestibular function is not a significant predictor of behavioral responses to visual motion, while oculomotor control and precision in vertical perception are associated with postural control.

Altered Resting-State Intranetwork and Internetwork Functional Connectivity in Patients With Chronic Unilateral Vestibulopathy

Lihong Si et al.

Summary: The study analyzed changes in resting-state brain functional connectivity in patients with CUVP and found significantly decreased FC in the right occipital gyrus and increased FC in the sensorimotor network. Patients with CUVP also showed decreased FC between multiple brain networks, suggesting abnormal integration of multisensory information may contribute to chronic dizziness and instability.

Vestibular Rehabilitation for Peripheral Vestibular Hypofunction: An Updated Clinical Practice Guideline From the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy of the American Physical Therapy Association

Courtney D. Hall et al.

Summary: Uncompensated vestibular hypofunction can negatively impact an individual's quality of life and daily activities, but vestibular rehabilitation therapy has been proven effective in improving symptoms and function. Clinicians should offer vestibular physical therapy to patients with impairments and limitations related to vestibular deficit. Specific exercise techniques, supervised therapy, and a home exercise program can be used to target identified limitations and improve outcomes.

Patient-Reported Disability After Computerized Posturographic Vestibular Retraining for Stable Unilateral Vestibular Deficit

Eytan A. David et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of computerized dynamic posturography-assisted retraining on reducing disability in patients with objectively assessed unilateral peripheral vestibular deficit, and to assess the feasibility of conducting a randomized clinical trial using this training method. The results showed that computerized dynamic posturography-assisted retraining was associated with clinically meaningful improvements in participant-reported disability among those with stable unilateral vestibular deficit and moderate to severe disability.

Paolo Gamba et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to analyze the abilities of professional athletes, such as footballers, to use mental navigation systems and cognitive maps for better physical performance and rehabilitation purposes. The results show that the navigation abilities of athletes are significantly better than those of non-sporting subjects and vestibular patients. This study provides new perspectives for rehabilitation, regardless of age, sex, and training conditions.

Effect of noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation on dynamic posture sway under visual deprivation in patients with bilateral vestibular hypofunction

Po-Yin Chen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) on healthy and bilateral vestibular hypofunction (BVH) participants in different walking conditions. The results showed that nGVS effectively reduced walking deviations for BVH patients in light conditions and decreased lateral deviation for both healthy and BVH participants in dark conditions. The C/P ratio significantly decreased for BVH participants during 2 Hz head yaw walking in light conditions.

Sophie Paredis et al.

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence of various symptoms in bilateral and unilateral vestibulopathy patients using the DISCOHAT acronym, finding that bilateral patients reported more severe symptoms. The acronym proved to be a quick and effective tool for comprehensive assessment, potentially improving uniformity in vestibular clinics worldwide.

Summary: Mild chronic vestibulopathy affects both vestibular-related tasks (balancing, path integration, rotational memory) and cognitive functions that rely on vestibular input, while functions relying on visual input remain intact, with no significant differences in overall brain structure.

Comparison of Activity-Based Home Program and Cawthorne-Cooksey Exercises in Patients With Chronic Unilateral Peripheral Vestibular Disorders

Bilgehan Tekin Dal et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that an activity-based home program was more effective at improving home management tasks, occupational tasks, and balance in patients with chronic peripheral vestibular disorders compared to an exercise-based home treatment program. The results were based on a single-blind randomized controlled trial conducted at university dizziness management clinics with participants between 18 and 65 years old. The study used outcome measures such as Visual Analog Scale, Vestibular Disorders Activities of Daily Living Scale, and computerized dynamic posturography before and after the treatment program.

Changes in daily energy expenditure and movement behavior in unilateral vestibular hypofunction: Relationships with neuro-otological parameters

Marco Alessandrini et al.

Summary: The study evaluated energy expenditure in chronic unilateral vestibular hypofunction (UVH) patients under resting and free-living conditions using a wrist-worn physical activity tracker and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). UVH patients showed significantly lower values in resting energy expenditure, movement energy expenditure, hours spent upright, number of strides, distance covered, and total daily energy expenditure compared to the healthy control group. Multiple correlations were found between free-living and resting energy expenditure and neurootological parameters in UVH participants.

Head Roll-Tilt Subjective Visual Vertical Test in the Diagnosis of Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness

Chihiro Yagi et al.

Summary: High head tilt perception gain (HTPG) in the head roll-tilt subjective visual vertical (HT-SVV) test may be a specific marker for discriminating persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) from other chronic vestibular diseases, as conventional vestibular tests did not show abnormalities in PPPD.
