Alterations in the Microbiota of Caged Honeybees in the Presence of Nosema ceranae Infection and Related Changes in Functionality

Daniele Alberoni et al.

Summary: Changes in the gut microbial composition of honeybees can impair their metabolic functions. Caged honeybees and those infected with Nosema ceranae showed significant changes in their gut microbiota, with colonization of environmental and potentially pathogenic bacteria. Environmental bacteria or supplemented bacterial mixtures increased the metabolic potential of the honeybee gut microbiome.

β-Glucan Induces Distinct and Protective Innate Immune Memory in Differentiated Macrophages

Summary: Beta-glucan induces trained immunity in macrophages, enhancing protection against infection through increased recruitment of innate leukocytes and local clearance of bacteria, sustained by metabolic and functional changes.

Social immunity in honey bees: royal jelly as a vehicle in transferring bacterial pathogen fragments between nestmates

Gyan Harwood et al.

Summary: Social immunity in honey bees involves the transfer of immunological compounds through royal jelly, promoting higher pathogen resistance in offspring. This form of immunity also allows queens to prime their eggs with pathogen fragments, enhancing the embryo's immune system. Consuming pathogen cells induces increased levels of antimicrobial peptides in royal jelly.

Bacterial and Fungal Toll-Like Receptor Activation Elicits Type I IFN Responses in Mast Cells

Lisa Kornstaedt et al.

Summary: Mast cells play a role in the resolution phase of inflammation by producing mediators like IFN-beta that regulate macrophage phagocytosis. Deficiency in mast cells can result in decreased efferocytosis and phagocytosis during the resolution of inflammation.

Macrophage mediated recognition and clearance of Borrelia burgdorferi elicits MyD88-dependent and -independent phagosomal signals that contribute to phagocytosis and inflammation

Sarah J. Benjamin et al.

Summary: The study found that MyD88(-/-) BMDMs have impaired bacterial uptake but similar phagosomal maturation compared to WT BMDMs. RNA-sequencing identified a large cohort of differentially expressed MyD88-dependent genes involved in actin reorganization and cytoskeleton rearrangement during phagocytosis, as well as several MyD88-independent chemokines associated with inflammatory cell recruitment. The findings suggest that while MyD88 signaling enhances bacterial uptake and clearance by macrophages, it is not strictly required for these processes.

Nosema Disease of European Honey Bees

Richard Galajda et al.

Summary: Nosematosis is a honey bee disease caused by Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae, with exposure to pesticides and nutritional stress being key factors that weaken the immune response of bees and make them more susceptible to parasites. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is an important method for detecting and distinguishing between the two species causing the disease.
