Assessing the stability-indicating properties of alternative potency assays for inactivated influenza vaccine

Aleksei Ekimov et al.

Summary: Determining the potency of a vaccine is crucial to ensure appropriate dosage, lot consistency, and stability over the vaccine's lifespan. This study compared a surface plasmon resonance-based assay and two enzyme linked immunoassays with the current Single Radial Immunodiffusion (SRID) assay, as well as their correlation with mouse immunogenicity under stressed conditions. The alternative assays showed good correspondence with SRID in most stress conditions and matched the immunogenicity in mice. These assays have the potential to replace or complement SRID, pending further analysis.

Global production capacity of seasonal and pandemic influenza vaccines in 2019

Erin Sparrow et al.

Summary: The study compares global capacity for production of influenza vaccines in 2019, showing a slight increase in annual seasonal influenza vaccine production capacity and a rising trend in potential annual influenza pandemic vaccine production capacity. However, these estimates should be interpreted cautiously as they are based on assumptions that may impact supply. Pandemic vaccines would not be immediately available, taking four to six months for initial supplies with further time needed to reach maximum capacity.

Broad Reactivity Single Domain Antibodies against Influenza Virus and Their Applications to Vaccine Potency Testing and Immunotherapy

Andrew Tung Yep et al.

Summary: Influenza virus poses challenges due to its antigenic variability, but there are conserved epitopes that could be targeted for therapeutic development. Single domain antibodies, with their preference for specific epitopes, small size, flexibility, and stability, are well-suited to address these vulnerabilities and provide robust therapeutics for controlling influenza.

Unique features of a recombinant haemagglutinin influenza vaccine that influence vaccine performance

Arun B. Arunachalam et al.

Summary: The RIV4 influenza vaccine, produced through recombinant technology, has distinct post-translational modifications and structural features that result in high levels of protective antibodies. Compared to traditional influenza vaccines, RIV4 has advantages in reducing reliance on virus and process impurities, and improving the breadth of immune responses.
