Up-Regulated Interleukin-10 Induced by E2F Transcription Factor 2-MicroRNA-17-5p Circuitry in Extrafollicular Effector B Cells Contributes to Autoantibody Production in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Lingxiao Xu et al.

Summary: Elevated IL-10 levels in SLE patients contribute to B cell-promoting effects, leading to autoantibody production and tissue damage. IL-10+ DN2 B cell subsets were correlated with disease activity, anti-dsDNA antibodies, anti-Sm antibodies, and IgG anticardiolipin levels in SLE patients. Th10 cells were associated with IL-10+ DN2 frequencies, antinuclear antibody titers, and proteinuria levels in SLE patients.

Inhibition of microRNA-448 suppresses CD4+ T cell inflammatory activation via up-regulating suppressor of cytokine signaling 5 in systemic lupus erythematosus

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: The expression level of miR-448 is high in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and positively correlated with disease severity. Inhibition of miR-448 can alleviate SLE symptoms, improve kidney and spleen damage, reduce inflammatory infiltration, and promote Treg cell activation.

2019 ACR/EULAR classification criteria and therapy in predicting organ damage accrual in patients with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus: A retrospective study over the last 29 years

Nastasia Kifer et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to predict the risk of organ damage occurrence in patients with childhood-onset SLE (cSLE). The study found that organ damage is unlikely to occur in 50% of patients within the first 6 years since diagnosis. High number of 2019 ACR/EULAR criteria and glucocorticoid treatment are associated with damage accrual.

Loss-of-function variants in SAT1 cause X-linked childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus

Lingxiao Xu et al.

Summary: This research found two novel SAT1 LOF variants through whole exome sequencing in families with multiple siblings affected by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), demonstrating their association with SLE. The study highlights the pathogenic role of dysregulated polyamine catabolism in lupus.

Hypomethylation of miR-17-92 cluster in lupus T cells and no significant role for genetic factors in the lupus-associated DNA methylation signature

Patrick Coit et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the genome-wide DNA methylation of lupus patients and found that in addition to the hypomethylation of interferon-regulated genes, the miR-17-92 cluster also showed hypomethylation in patients with lupus, which is associated with T cell activation. The expression of miR-19b1 and miR-18a was significantly correlated with lupus disease activity.

Short-term Side Effects of Pulse Steroid Treatment in Children

Gulbaran Koncak et al.

Summary: This study evaluated pediatric patients who were treated with pulse steroid therapy at a hospital in Turkey and analyzed the early side effects of the treatment. The study found that the patients had significantly higher fasting blood glucose levels during treatment compared to before treatment. The most common side effects observed were dermatological, psychiatric, and gastrointestinal. Additionally, some patients developed hypertension. There is a lack of research on pulse steroid therapy and its side effects, especially in children.

Neuropsychiatric Syndromes in Childhood-Onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Flavia Patricia Sena Teixeira Santos et al.

Summary: Neuropsychiatric syndromes are prevalent in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) patients, with headaches, seizures, cognitive dysfunction, mood disorders, and psychosis being the most common. Determining the prevalence of each syndrome in cSLE may help improve clinical awareness of the potentially fatal and disabling conditions.

Urinary exosomal miR-146a as a marker of albuminuria, activity changes and disease flares in lupus nephritis

Javier Perez-Hernandez et al.

Summary: Urinary exosomal miR-146a levels are correlated with lupus activity, proteinuria and histological features, discriminating patients with lupus nephritis and serving as a good baseline marker for SLE flares. The study also identified a significant biological association between miR-146a and the TRAF6 axis in the progression of lupus nephritis renal fibrosis.

Longitudinal growth patterns and final height in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus

Pondtip Jongvilaikasem et al.

Summary: Patients with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus are at risk of becoming short adults, with independent risk factors including male sex, short stature at diagnosis, low body weight at final height, and cumulative corticosteroid dose. Adequate nutrition and corticosteroid minimization should be emphasized in patients at high risk for short final height.

Abnormalities of the type I interferon signaling pathway in lupus autoimmunity

Stefania Gallucci et al.

Summary: Type I interferons (IFNs) play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), and aberrant IFN signaling can exacerbate SLE. Genetic and epigenetic abnormalities are present in SLE patients. Neutralizing anti-type I IFN receptor antibodies may be a therapeutic strategy.

P2RY8 variants in lupus patients uncover a role for the receptor in immunological tolerance

Yuke He et al.

Summary: The study identified novel or rare P2RY8 missense variants in lupus kindreds, which decreased protein expression and were associated with lupus nephritis and abnormal B cell subsets. Overexpression of P2RY8 helps restrain plasma cell development and reinforce negative selection of B cells.

Macrophage Polarization and Plasticity in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Mariame Mohamed Ahamada et al.

Summary: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that primarily affects adults, especially females and non-Caucasian individuals. Despite numerous studies on SLE, the exact pathogenesis remains unclear and there is no specific drug for effective treatment. The involvement of macrophages in the development of SLE is increasingly recognized, suggesting a potential for macrophage-centered therapeutic approaches.

Youssef M. Mosaad et al.

Summary: The study investigated the association between ARID5B gene polymorphisms and SLE, especially LN, in Egyptian children, revealing that ARID5B rs10821936 may be a susceptibility risk factor for juvenile SLE. However, rs10994982 was not found to be associated with jSLE.

Relationship Between Genetic Risk and Age of Diagnosis in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Daniela Dominguez et al.

Summary: The study investigated the association between genetic risk scores and age of systemic lupus erythematosus diagnosis in children and adults. The results showed that non-HLA genetic risk scores were negatively correlated with age of diagnosis, while HLA genetic risk scores were positively correlated. It suggests a linear relationship between genetic risk and age of SLE diagnosis.
