The Anti-Atherosclerosis Effect of Anakinra, a Recombinant Human Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist, in Apolipoprotein E Knockout Mice

Eu Jeong Ku et al.

Summary: Anakinra, a recombinant human IL-1 receptor antagonist, has been found to have inhibitory effects on the progression of atherosclerosis. It reduces plaque size and serum triglyceride levels, and suppresses inflammatory gene expressions and cell migration. In animal experiments, it also decreases macrophage infiltration and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 expression.

Novel Nongenetic Murine Model of Hyperglycemia and Hyperlipidemia-Associated Aggravated Atherosclerosis

Susanne Gaul et al.

Summary: In this study, a non-genetic mouse model was established to mimic the effects of hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia on atherosclerosis and to observe pathological changes induced by dietary modifications. The results showed that mice with combined hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia displayed exacerbated atherosclerosis after dietary adjustments.

Recruitment of pro-IL-1α to mitochondrial cardiolipin, via shared LC3 binding domain, inhibits mitophagy and drives maximal NLRP3 activation

Jargalsaikhan Dagvadorj et al.

Summary: The balance between NLRP3 inflammasome activation and mitophagy is crucial for cellular homeostasis, with IL-1 alpha playing a key role in regulating this balance. IL-1 alpha deficiency can lead to altered cellular functions and health by affecting mitochondrial damage and NLRP3 inflammasome activation. The interaction between IL-1 alpha and mitochondrial cardiolipin disrupts mitophagy and enhances NLRP3 inflammasome activation, highlighting the importance of this regulatory mechanism in cellular health.

Interleukin-1α Is a Central Regulator of Leukocyte-Endothelial Adhesion in Myocardial Infarction and in Chronic Kidney Disease

Stefan J. Schunk et al.

Summary: The study found that IL-1 alpha is strongly expressed on the surface of monocytes from patients with AMI and CKD, and is associated with a higher risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease events. In experimental mice, IL-1 alpha mediates leukocyte-endothelial adhesion and promotes accumulation of immune cells in inflamed tissue.
