Resolving the Formation Mechanism of HONO via Ammonia-Promoted Photosensitized Conversion of Monomeric NO2 on Urban Glass Surfaces

Jiangping Liu et al.

Summary: Experiments have confirmed that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) undergo a photosensitized reaction with nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ammonia (NH3) under UVA light, producing nitrous acid (HONO). This new mechanism does not require the formation of NO2 dimer and is facilitated by the presence of NH3. The results suggest that this new mechanism can be a dominant source of HONO in urban areas.

A new understanding of the microstructure of soot particles: The reduced graphene oxide-like skeleton and its visible-light driven formation of reactive oxygen species

Jiali Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found that the intrinsic structure of soot is more similar to reduced graphene oxide, and it can serve as a potential carbo-photocatalyst with similar defective sites and optoelectronic performance. This finding is crucial for understanding the role of soot in photochemical aging processes.

Heterogeneous photochemical uptake of NO2 on the soil surface as an important ground-level HONO source

Wangjin Yang et al.

Summary: The production of nitrous acid (HONO) through heterogeneous photochemical reactions on various Chinese soils was investigated. The properties of the soil, such as pH and organic content, influenced the efficiency of this process. The results showed a positive correlation between gamma and irradiation/temperature, and a negative relationship with relative humidity.

Polar Aromatic Compounds in Soot from Premixed Flames of Kerosene, Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene, and Kerosene-Synthetic Biofuels

Aurea Andrade-Eiroa et al.

Summary: This study characterized polar aromatic compounds (PACs) adsorbed on soot produced in laboratory premixed flames of fossil kerosene (Jet A-1), synthetic paraffinic kerosene (SPK), and Jet A-1/synthetic biofuels for the first time. The results showed that soot from Jet A-1/biofuel premixed flames is richer in PACs compared to pure Jet A-1 and SPK, with different fuels producing varying concentrations of specific aromatic compounds.
