A Guide to ComBat Harmonization of Imaging Biomarkers in Multicenter Studies

Fanny Orlhac et al.

Summary: The impact of PET image acquisition and reconstruction parameters on SUV measurements or radiomic feature values is discussed in this article. The use of the ComBat method to reduce the scanner effect is explained with practical examples. Situations where the ComBat assumptions are not met and should not be used are also presented.

Combatting the effect of image reconstruction settings on lymphoma [18F]FDG PET metabolic tumor volume assessment using various segmentation methods

Maria C. Ferrandez et al.

Summary: This study assessed the sensitivity of different image reconstruction methods on various metabolic tumor volume (MTV) segmentation methods and the ability of ComBat to improve the reproducibility of MTVs. The results showed that the SUV4.0 method was the least sensitive to different reconstructions, and after using ComBat for harmonization, most segmentation methods showed improved agreement in MTVs among different reconstructions. The study also found that the version of ComBat using log-transformed datasets was more accurate and precise compared to the version using non-transformed distributions.

Impact of time of flight and point spread function on quantitative parameters of lung lesions in 18F-FDG PET/CT

Kemin Huang et al.

Summary: TOF and PSF have significant effects on the quantitative parameters of lung lesions in F-18-FDG PET/CT. The reconstruction algorithm OSEM + TOF + PSF can increase SUVmax, SUVmean and SNR, and reduce MTV, especially for small lesions and low contrast lesions. TLG remains relatively stable across different reconstruction algorithms.
