Feasibility of a novel shield of nuclear radiation with W-Ni-Fe-Co and La-Bi alloys alternative to Pb and ordinary concrete absorbers

F. Akman et al.

Summary: Preventing high-energetic nuclear radiation photons is a significant concern. Many studies have been conducted to find alternative materials to lead, including a novel shield design of alloys formed by the combination of W, La and Bi. The photon shielding performances of these investigated alloys were studied using Monte Carlo GEANT4 simulation code and XCOM computer software. The results show that the W-3 alloy has better shielding performance compared to Pb and OC materials.

Grafting red clay with Bi2O3 nanoparticles into epoxy resin for gamma-ray shielding applications

Mohamed. Elsafi et al.

Summary: We developed new composites with epoxy resin, red clay, and bismuth oxide nanoparticles for photons shielding applications. By testing different ratios of red clay to Bi2O3 NPs, we found that the composite with 40% epoxy, 50% red clay, and 10% Bi2O3 NPs showed the best shielding capabilities. This composite also had a lower transmission factor and higher linear attenuation coefficient compared to other composites.

Structural, mechanical, radiation shielding properties and albedo parameters of alumina borate glasses: Role of CeO2and Er2O3

Abuzer Acikgoz et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of CeO2 and Er2O3 on the physical, structural, and mechanical properties of a B2O3-Na2O-Al2O3 glass composition. CeO2 and Er2O3 doping affected radiation shielding properties and optical properties, with 1 mol% Er2O3 showing a better reduction in reflectivity of gamma rays compared to 1 mol% CeO2. The structural and mechanical properties of the doped borate glasses were also examined and compared.

Comparison of radiation shielding ability of Bi2O3 micro and nanoparticles for radiation shields

Aljawhara H. Almuqrin et al.

Summary: The radiation attenuation ability of Bi2O3 powder in different sizes was investigated. It was found that the linear attenuation coefficient of micro-sized Bi2O3 is higher than that of nano-sized Bi2O3 when they have the same mass, and the difference between the two samples decreases with increasing photon energy. The mass and thickness required to reduce the initial photon intensity by half were also reported.

Utilization of hazardous red mud in silicone rubber/MWCNT nanocomposites for high performance electromagnetic interference shielding

Rishu Prasad et al.

Summary: In this study, red mud, a hazardous industrial waste, was used as a filler in silicone rubber and multi-wall carbon nanotubes to create nanocomposites for efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. The results showed that the nanocomposite sheets exhibited superior microwave absorption and EMI shielding performance, making them suitable for commercial shielding applications. The key highlight of this study is the sustainable use of a hazardous waste to suppress EMI pollution.

Radiation shielding performance for local granites

Ayman M. Abdalla et al.

Summary: This study investigates the radiation shielding performance of Najran granite samples. Experiments were conducted to measure the gamma shielding parameters of different types of granite samples, and the results showed that the samples had considerable attenuating effectiveness at low energies. The experimental results were consistent with theoretical calculations, and the chemical composition of the samples was also analyzed.

H. Ozdogan et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to evaluate the buildup factors and photon attenuation effectiveness of borate glasses doped with Cd, Fe, V, and Bi. The mass attenuation coefficients, half-value layer, mean free path, and effective atomic number of the glass systems were determined and compared with theoretical results. Exposure buildup factors were also calculated and it was concluded that SrBiO20 glass is an alternative material for photon attenuation.

Effects of desiccation cracks and vegetation on the shallow stability of a red clay cut slope under rainfall infiltration

Qian-Feng Gao et al.

Summary: The study examines the shallow stability of a red clay cut slope during rainfall and finds that the presence of desiccation cracks can cause shallow failure, reducing the factor of safety. Control of crack development is crucial for slope safety, and vegetation with longer roots significantly improves slope stability.

Origin and provenance of Red Clay in north Hunan Province, China: Inferred from grain-size analysis and end-member modelling

Hai-Cheng Lai et al.

Summary: The research reveals that the Red Clays have aeolian origins. End-member modeling shows that the Red Clays consist of two components (EM1 and EM2 with mode sizes of 5.6 and 11.2 mu m, respectively). The south-eastward-fining trend suggests that the EM1 component (fine dust) was transported from North China, while the EM2 component (coarse dust) is mainly from the nearby desiccated fluvial systems of the Yangtze River.
