Laser deposited superalloys with rotated substrate orientations: Microstructures and single-crystal formation

W. J. Chen et al.

Summary: One-and multi-layer laser powder deposition experiments were conducted on single crystal (SX) Ni-based superalloy DD6 to investigate the effect of substrate orientation on microstructure and SX nature. Different substrate rotations produced various dendritic domain distributions and stray grain susceptibilities. The orientation-dependent susceptibility of stray grains was attributed to the different sensitivities of columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) caused by substrate orientations. The results provide insights into controlling stray grains in laser processed SX superalloys.

A comparable study on stray grain susceptibilities on different crystallographic planes in single crystal superalloys

J. C. Guo et al.

Summary: The substrate orientation significantly affects the formation of stray grains in laser remelted single crystal superalloys, with a greater impact on (011) and (111) planes compared to the (001) plane. The susceptibility to stray grain formation is weakest in the (011) plane and strongest in the (111) plane, attributed to the lower volume fraction of local stray grains on the (011) plane. A laser repair performed in the (011) plane along the [100] direction can most effectively depress stray grain formation, providing insights into avoiding stray grain formation in future laser repairs of single crystal components.

Numerical analysis of intermetallic compounds formed during laser welding of Aluminum-Magnesium dissimilar couple

Sabrine Ben Halim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the laser welding process of dissimilar Aluminum-Magnesium materials and finds a heterogeneous mixture formation in the molten pool. The results indicate that convection, thermal, and mass diffusivities strongly influence the transport phenomenon during laser beam welding. Mechanical properties of the welded joint are affected by the formation of intermetallic phases, leading to weld cracking. The numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental findings.
