Prominent role of reversed austenite on corrosion property of super 13Cr martensitic stainless steel

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: The microstructure and corrosion properties of super 13Cr martensitic stainless steel processed by different tempering methods were investigated. It was found that the volume fraction of reversed austenite reached a maximum of 13.5 vol.% with two-step tempering. The reversed austenite nucleated and distributed near the boundaries of martensite laths during tempering, and its growth was promoted by the diffusion of Ni, Mn, and C. The presence of reversed austenite, enriched with Ni, Mn, C, and with an ultrafine size, contributed to the improved corrosion resistance of the steel. Potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed that the two-step tempered specimen exhibited better pitting resistance and a thicker passivation film compared to the other samples. The beneficial effect of reversed austenite on the corrosion properties of the steel was confirmed.

Different augmentations of absorbed hydrogen under elastic straining in high-pressure gaseous hydrogen environment by as-quenched and as- tempered martensitic steels: combined experimental and simulation study

Masoud Moshtaghi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the hydrogen embrittlement behavior of as-quenched and as-tempered martensitic steels under elastic straining in a high-pressure gaseous hydrogen environment for the first time. The difference in the total content of defects acting as H trap sites had the most significant contribution to the increase in absorbed hydrogen content under elastic loading. The as-quenched specimen experienced hydrogen-induced fracture during elastic straining in the hydrogen environment, while the tempered specimen remained unfractured under elastic loading.

Effect of quenching and tempering on structure and mechanical properties of a low-alloy 0.25C steel

E. Tkachev et al.

Summary: The relationship between the microstructure and mechanical properties of a 0.25%C-1.6%Si-1.5Mn-0.5%Cr-0.3%Mo steel was studied after quenching and tempering at different temperatures. The steel exhibited a combination of high yield strength (1350 MPa), moderate elongation-to-failure (9%), and good impact toughness (60 J/cm2). The precipitation of different carbides at different tempering temperatures affected the strength and toughness of the steel, with higher tempering temperatures leading to decreased strength and increased toughness.

Simultaneous enhancement of strength and ductility in a medium carbon low-alloy steel induced by secondary martensite and Cu-rich particles

X. X. Dong et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve both the strength and ductility of a medium carbon low-alloy steel by adding Cu and conducting the partitioning treatment. The microstructure obtained consisted of temper martensite, retained austenite, M-A islands/secondary martensite, bainitic ferrite, and nanosized Cu-rich particles. The partitioning temperature significantly influenced the microstructure, leading to distinct variations in mechanical properties. The increase in partitioning temperature from 240°C to 380°C resulted in a decrease in yield strength from 1470 MPa to 1110 MPa, while the ultimate tensile strength gradually decreased from 2300 MPa to 1440 MPa. However, the ductility significantly increased from 9% to 26% with the increasing partitioning temperature. The formation of numerous nanosized Cu-rich particles in the temper martensite contributed to the simultaneous increase in yield strength and ductility.

Strength-Toughness of a Low-Alloy 0.25C Steel Treated by Q&P Processing

Evgeniy Tkachev et al.

Summary: Quenching and partitioning (Q&P) treatments of 0.25C steel can create microstructures with improved balance of mechanical properties. The combination of bainitic transformation and carbon enrichment during partitioning leads to the coexistence of irregularly shaped retained austenite (RA) islands embedded in bainitic ferrite and film-like RA in the martensitic matrix. The best strength-toughness combinations were achieved by quenching the steel samples to 210-230 degrees C and subjecting them to partitioning at 350 degrees C for 100-600 s, resulting in tempered lath martensite mixed with finely dispersed and stabilized RA and particles of ?-carbide.

Rapid tempering of a medium-carbon martensitic steel: In-depth exploration of the microstructure - mechanical property evolution

Vahid Javaheri et al.

Summary: This study discusses the tensile and fracture toughness properties, as well as the microstructural evolution, of a medium-carbon, low-alloy steel under different rapid tempering conditions. The results indicate that tempering temperature has a significant influence on the mechanical properties and microstructural features, regardless of the holding time. By properly designing the rapid tempering process, a combination of high tensile properties and fracture toughness can be achieved compared to conventional tempering.

Quench and Tempered Embrittlement of Ultra-High-Strength Steels with Transition Carbides

Roman Mishnev et al.

Summary: The effect of tempering after water quenching on the strength and fracture toughness of two steels with specific chemical compositions was studied. The precipitation of transition ?-Fe2C carbides in martensitic matrix increased fracture toughness and eliminated quench embrittlement in one of the steels. On the other hand, tempered martensite embrittlement at higher tempering temperature resulted in decreased impact energy, ductility, and strength and elongation for the other steel.

Tempering Behavior of a Si-Rich Low-Alloy Medium-Carbon Steel

Sergey Borisov et al.

Summary: The addition of Si in 0.33C-1.8Si-1.44Mn-0.58Cr steel leads to a unique tempering behavior, characterized by two distinct sequential stages. Stage I involves precipitation of transition carbides, increasing strength, ductility, and toughness. Stage II involves decomposition of retained austenite to bainitic ferrite and transition carbides. Stage III does not occur due to Si addition suppressing the precipitation of cementite. Low-temperature tempering leads to the formation of transition carbides, increasing ductile fractures and improving impact toughness without strength degradation.

Improving mechanical properties and retained-austenite stability of a medium carbon Q&P steel by adjusting phase ratio

X. X. Dong et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the mechanisms for improving the mechanical properties and retained-austenite stability of Q&P steel by adjusting the phase ratio. The yield strength of the steel increased with increasing annealing temperature, while the ductility initially increased and then decreased. These observations are closely related to the specific phase constituent and retained austenite stability produced by the Q&P process.

Cementite Precipitation in Conventionally and Rapidly Tempered 4340 Steel

V. K. Euser et al.

Summary: The influence of rapid tempering on cementite precipitation in 4340 steel was investigated in this study. The results showed that rapid tempering can refine the cementite diameter but has no significant effects on cementite morphology and phase fraction. Previous studies have suggested that improved toughness performance in rapidly tempered conditions may be attributed to differences in retained austenite content rather than carbide refinement.

Excellent tensile local deformability and toughness of a tempered low carbon-low alloy steel with multilevel boundaries

Chong Gao et al.

Summary: Tempered low carbon-low alloy steel demonstrates excellent strength, plasticity, local deformability, and toughness. The impressive local deformability and impact toughness are mainly attributed to the hinderance of crack propagation by multilevel boundaries and dispersed fine carbides, highlighting the intrinsic relationships between toughness and local formability in tensile testing.

The Mechanical Properties of Low Alloy TRIP-Aided Steel: The Role of Retained Austenite

Ravi Ranjan et al.

Summary: Thermo-mechanical treatments were used to study the effects of recrystallisation and deformation induced ferrite transformation (DIFT) in a low-carbon, low alloy CMnSiAl TRIP-aided steel. The study showed that the prior transformation of retained austenite to martensite does not necessarily lead to brittle failure, and that the deformation of a composite microstructure plays a significant role in the improved mechanical properties of TRIP-aided steels compared to conventional high strength steels. The findings provide insights for the design of alloy composition and subsequent thermo-mechanical treatments.
