Barbituric acid appended fluorescent sensor for the detection of Cu2+/Hg2+ions along with real-life utility in recognition of malathionin food samples and fingerprint imaging

Gitanjali Jindal et al.

Summary: A fluorescent sensor based on barbituric acid has been synthesized and used for the detection of metal ions (Cu2+ / Hg2+) in aqueous medium. The sensor showed remarkable quenching of fluorescence when coupled with Cu2+ / Hg2+ ions. The study also demonstrated the potential application of the sensor in pesticide detection and forensic science through the recognition of malathion in various food samples and the development of latent fingerprints.

Melamine Barbiturate as a Light-Induced Nanostructured Supramolecular Material for a Bioinspired Oxygen and Organic Radical Trap and Stabilization

Alexandra A. Timralieva et al.

Summary: The use of coantioxidant systems can enhance the effectiveness of antioxidant species in tissue repair and regeneration. In this paper, a novel scheme of trapping and neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) during the self-assembly of supramolecular melamine barbiturate material is introduced. This scheme mimics the biological process of ROS generation and produces stable hydroperoxyl and organic radicals. The proposed scheme opens the way to using supramolecular assemblies as components of coantioxidant systems and a source of organic radicals.

Synthesis of Catalytic Microswimmers Based on Anisotropic Platinum Sorption on Melamine Barbiturate Supramolecular Structures

Varvara S. Alabusheva et al.

Summary: This study proposes a direct synthesis approach for creating anisotropic microswimmers as an alternative to top-down fabrication methods for asymmetric artificial swimmers. Melamine barbiturate (MBA) self-assembled supramolecular crystals are used as an asymmetric matrix for selective chemical platinum deposition. The surface functional groups of the crystals provide acidic sites for platinum sorption, leading to the formation of a platinum catalytic layer. The MBA asymmetric swimmers show directional motion in a fuel environment, and previous studies have shown that MBA has pH-dependency and encapsulation capacity, offering opportunities for the formation of functional materials.

Summary: The study demonstrates that barbiturate-based molecules can form nanostructures through supramolecular polymerization under specific conditions, enhancing the emission efficiency. Additionally, the positional difference in regioisomers also influences the interchain association of supramolecular polymers, resulting in different luminescent soft materials.

A unique small molecule class of fluorophores with large Stokes shift based on the electron deficient 9-methoxypyrroloisoquinolinetrione core

Michael D. Khitrov et al.

Summary: A novel fluorescent core based on electron-deficient 9-methoxypyrroloisoquinolinetrione moiety has been developed, showing large Stokes shift up to 6519 cm-1. However, unlike parent 5-hydroxyisoquinolones, 9-methoxypyrroloisoquinolinetrione are not superphotoacidic. Methylation of 5-hydroxyisoquinolones reduces the Stokes shift from 5086 to 4689 cm-1. The increase in Stokes shift upon the formation of an imide cycle is due to unusual bond-length relaxation involving the imide ring.

Supramolecular polymerization of thiobarbituric acid naphthalene dye

Takumi Aizawa et al.

Summary: This study reports the self-assembly of 2-thiobarbituric acid-functionalized naphthalene dye into crystalline fibers, which exhibit different material properties compared to the previously reported oxo-barbituric acid derivative that forms curved supramolecular polymers. Detailed analysis using H-1-NMR, DFT calculation, and X-ray diffraction reveals that the crystalline fiber is formed through a tape-like hydrogen-bonding pattern due to the weaker hydrogen-bond-acceptor ability of the thiocarbonyl group.

Visual Method for Selective Detection of Hg2+ Based on the Competitive Interactions of 2-Thiobarbituric Acid with Au Nanoparticles and Hg2+

Xigui Liu et al.

Summary: A facile visual strategy for specific identification of mercury ions in an aqueous environment is presented based on the competitive interactions of 2-thiobarbituric acid with Au nanoparticles and Hg2+. The method relies on the unique optical performance of AuNPs and the sulfophile affinity of both AuNPs and Hg2+. This approach allows for specific detection of Hg2+ without interfering metal ions, with a detection limit as low as 2.4 nM, making it effective for environmental water sample testing.

Comparing C2=O and C2=S Barbiturates: Different Hydrogen-Bonding Patterns of Thiobarbiturates in Solution and the Solid State

Chenming Li et al.

Summary: This study compares the hydrogen bonding properties of C2=O and C2=S barbiturates, revealing differences in association constants, Gibbs free energy of association increment, and coalescence behavior of N-HS=C bonded assemblies. Introduction of C2=S in Langmuir films inhibits 2D crystallization and results in significant morphology deviation, while embedding into a hydrophobic polymer shows stronger hydrogen bonding in the thiobarbiturate-bearing PTB compared to the barbiturate-bearing PB. These findings suggest that thiobarbiturates in polymers form stronger hydrogen bonds than observed in solution.

Insights into the Early Stages of Melamine Cyanurate Nucleation from Aqueous Solution

Nikita Orekhov et al.

Summary: This study provides molecular insights into the self-assembly of melamine cyanurate in aqueous solution and identifies mechanisms of aggregation. The research suggests that the formation of small M-CA complexes is mainly stabilized through aromatic p-p stacking rather than hydrogen bond formation. It also demonstrates that changing the concentration ratio of M to CA leads to a variation in the structure of critical nuclei, indicating a potential for the programmable design of functional supramolecular materials.
