A study on the metallurgical characterisation of the longitudinally sampled friction stir processed TIG welded dissimilar aluminum joints

Sipokazi Mabuwa et al.

Summary: One-pass and two-pass friction stir processing (FSP) were used to improve the microstructure and tensile characteristics of TIG weldments of AA6082-T651 and AA8011-H14. The FSP transformed the coarse grain structure into a refined grain structure, eliminating pre-existing defects. The ultimate tensile strength of the TIG + FSP passes was significantly higher than that of the TIG welded joints. The microhardness of the joints post-FSP was also higher than the TIG weldment. The findings were consistent with the grain sizes of the welded joints, with TIG results showing a coarse-grained structure and TIG + FSP results showing a fine sandwich-arranged grain structure.

Traverse and longitudinal analysis of AA5083/AA6082 dissimilar joint

Molebogeng Oarabile Mmanyane Segaetsho et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical and microscopic characteristics of friction stir welded dissimilar joint between AA5083 and AA6082. The welding process parameters used were rotational speed of 900 rpm, traverse speed of 60 mm min(-1), and tool tilt angle of 1°. Samples were taken from various positions in both traverse and longitudinal directions and subjected to microstructural analysis, bending, and tensile tests. The microstructural analysis showed nonlinear behavior in both sampling directions, with notable differences between different locations within the joint. The ultimate tensile strength results indicated higher strength in traverse specimens compared to longitudinally sampled specimens, while the flexural strength results showed the opposite trend.

Processing of Al-Cu-Mg alloy by FSSP: Parametric analysis and the effect of cooling environment on microstructure evolution

Hesam Pouraliakbar et al.

Summary: Treatment of Al-Cu-Mg alloy using friction stir spot processing (FSSP) allows for microstructure modification by adjusting tool rotation speed and pin dwell-time. Microscopy inspections revealed a wide variety in morphological and size evolution of second-phase particles in air-treated samples, while underwater-treated samples showed uniformly refined spherical particles.

Effect of Friction Stir Processing on Mechanical Properties and Wear Resistance of Tungsten Inert Gas Welded Joint of Dissimilar Aluminum Alloys

Husain Mehdi et al.

Summary: This study examined the tensile strength of TIG welded joints improved by friction stir processing, with TF welded joints showing a more uniform dimple structure and higher micro-hardness. TF welded joints with ER5356 filler demonstrated superior wear resistance compared to TIG and TF welded joints with ER4043 filler.

Microstructural and mechanical properties of submerged multi-pass friction stir processed AA6082/AA8011 TIG-welded joint

Velaphi Msomi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between microstructure and mechanical properties in the AA6082/AA8011 TIG-welded joint subjected to submerged multi-pass friction stir processing. The increase in FSP passes led to grain refinement, with minimal impact on tensile strength but a significant effect on percentage elongation. Additionally, the microhardness of the stir zone increased with the number of FSP passes.

Effect of friction stir welding parameters on the residual stress distribution of Al-2024-T6 alloy

Majid Farhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influences of tool rotational speed and tool transverse speed on residual stresses in friction stir welding of Al 2024-T6 through finite element simulation and experimental measurement. The results showed significant changes in longitudinal residual stresses at different parameters, with the strain rate having the most effect at low rotational speeds.

Numerical and experimental investigation of defects formation during friction stir processing on AZ91

Agha Amini Fashami Hoda et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of tool rotational and traverse speeds on the thermal distribution and defect formation during friction stir processing. Results show that high-speed processing can lead to defects such as tunnels and grooves, while low-speed processing can result in flashes. The experimental results demonstrate that optimal speeds can produce defect-free processed samples.
