Learning patient-centredness with simulated/standardized patients: A realist review: BEME Guide No. 68

Christel Grau Canet-Wittkampf et al.

Summary: This study examines how healthcare learners and professionals learn patient-centredness through interventions involving standardized patients (SPs) in different healthcare educational contexts. The results reveal that interventions with SPs create a safe learning environment, facilitate reflective practice, and enable collaborative learning. These interventions trigger mechanisms such as confidence, comfort, safety, self-reflection, awareness, comparing & contrasting perspectives, and combining and broadening perspectives. Overall, the study proposes a program theory for learning patient-centredness through interventions with SPs.

The Family is the Patient: Promoting Early Childhood Mental Health in Pediatric Care

Stephen L. Buka et al.

Summary: Advances in developmental psychology, child psychiatry, and allied disciplines have highlighted the importance of events and experiences in early years on adult mental health challenges. However, the current children's mental health services lack a developmental or prevention-focused approach. Establishing an early childhood mental health system rooted in the principles of life-course health development can facilitate prevention and intervention strategies, with emphasis on healthy family environments, parent-child and family relationships, parents' emotional/behavioral health, and family routines. This system should provide proactive, trauma-informed, multidisciplinary care in pediatric primary care settings. Novel intervention approaches include 2-generational dyadic interventions, mental health-oriented telemedicine, and contingency management strategies.

'I found myself a despicable being!': Medical students face disturbing moral dilemmas

Diego Lima Ribeiro et al.

Summary: Understanding moral dilemmas experienced by medical students is crucial for educators to anticipate and reflect on these intense and complex experiences. These dilemmas have four intertwined dimensions, impacting students' prioritization of conflicting moral values, clash between inner motivation and external constraints, conflict between current and desired professional attitudes, and weighing of conflicting ethical principles during moral decision-making. Emotional responses to moral dilemmas are intense and long-lasting, affecting students' professional development and moral growth.

Co-constructive Patient Simulation A Learner-Centered Method to Enhance Communication and Reflection Skills

Andres Martin et al.

Summary: CCPS is a learner-centered approach where learners create challenging clinical cases, practice with experienced SPs, and engage in group debriefing sessions. Topics difficult to openly discuss are particularly suitable for this model, enriching simulation-based education by aligning with trainees' self-identified learning goals.

From Learning Psychiatry to Becoming Psychiatrists: A Qualitative Study of Co-constructive Patient Simulation

Andres Martin et al.

Summary: Co-constructive patient simulation (CCPS) is a novel approach in medical education that offers participatory and emotionally supportive learning experiences. Implemented in psychiatry, CCPS sessions center on clinically challenging situations and use an innovative 9R model for reflective practice, providing unique opportunities for autonomous and meaningful learning. The study highlights the potential of CCPS and the 9R model to meet the educational needs of psychiatry trainees and practitioners.
