Effects of dietary organic or inorganic iron concentrations on productive performance, egg quality, blood measurements, and tissue iron concentrations in aged laying hens

Jong Hyuk Kim et al.

Summary: The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effects of different organic or inorganic iron concentrations on aged laying hens. The results showed that supplementation of organic or inorganic iron increased eggshell color and feather iron concentrations. Diets supplemented with organic iron also improved eggshell color and hematocrit. Therefore, dietary supplementation of organic iron can enhance eggshell color and egg weight in aged laying hens.

Eggshell decalcification and skeletal mineralization during chicken embryonic development: defining candidate genes in the chorioallantoic membrane

Maeva Halgrain et al.

Summary: During chicken embryonic development, the eggshell plays a crucial role in skeleton calcification. The study explores the expression of candidate genes related to eggshell dissolution and transport of minerals to the embryo in the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) and yolk sac (YS). The findings reveal differences in gene regulation between CAM and YS, highlighting the importance of understanding the molecular components involved in bone mineralization.

Myostatin Mutation in Japanese Quail Increased Egg Size but Reduced Eggshell Thickness and Strength

Joonbum Lee et al.

Summary: Avian eggs provide significant benefits to science and society. Recent studies have shown that mutations in myostatin (MSTN) in quail and chickens improve meat yield but also affect eggshell quality. Mutant eggs had increased height, width, and weight, but decreased eggshell breaking strength (EBS) and thickness compared to wild-type eggs. The decrease in EBS was mainly attributed to a decrease in eggshell and palisade layer thickness.

Functional connections between bird eggshell stiffness and nest characteristics through risk of egg collision in nests

Chih-Ming Hung et al.

Summary: This study reveals the functional connection between bird nests and eggshells, suggesting that birds produce stiffer eggs in response to higher collision risk in unstable or enclosed nests. Results indicate that the evolution of eggshell stiffness is more likely to be influenced by nest characters. The study also highlights the trade-off between competing for established nesting niches and exploring new territories for birds.

Eggshell temperature during early and late incubation affects embryo and hatchling development in broiler chicks

Arda Sozcu et al.

Summary: This study found that early high temperature treatment during incubation affects bone development, while late high temperature treatment leads to a decline in hatchability and chick quality in broiler chicks.

A simple daily dynamic feeding regimen for reducing phosphorus consumption and excretion in laying hens

Xujie Liao et al.

Summary: Adjusting the phosphorus feeding regimen according to the daily egg-laying cycle can improve phosphorus utilization efficiency in laying hens. This study found that supplementing dietary phosphorus in accordance with daily serum phosphorus rhythms supports laying performance and egg quality while significantly reducing phosphorus intake and excretion.

Prolonged scotophase within a 24 hour light regime improves eggshell quality by enhancing calcium deposition in laying hens

Qian Xin et al.

Summary: Calcium and phosphorus transporters play crucial roles in the absorption and transport of these minerals in the body, influencing eggshell quality. Different light-dark programs can affect eggshell quality and the expression of genes related to calcium and phosphorus transportation in laying hens. A longer dark phase regime resulted in decreased feed intake and egg weight, but increased eggshell hardness and mineral content in the eggshell. The increased blood calcium and phosphorus levels during the dark phase were beneficial for eggshell mineralization, demonstrating a potential strategy for improving eggshell quality in laying hens.

The effects of the breeder index value on the microscopic structure of egg shells, hatching results, and hybrid performance

S. Kamanli et al.

Summary: The quality of egg shell and bone properties of hen are crucial for hen welfare, consumers, and producers, with genetic selection having a significant impact on these characteristics. This study found that index selection can affect eggshell structures, hatching results, and hybrid performance.

How much calcium to shell out? Eggshell calcium carbonate content is greater in birds with thinner shells, larger clutches and longer lifespans

Stephanie C. McClelland et al.

Summary: The study found that the calcium carbonate content in eggshells is positively correlated with species that have thinner eggshells and smaller eggs. Additionally, species with smaller clutch sizes tend to have lower calcium carbonate content in their eggshells. Furthermore, for species with larger clutch sizes, the calcium carbonate content in eggshells is negatively correlated with their mean lifespan.
