In-house 3D-printed aligners: effect of in vivo ageing on mechanical properties

Esad Can et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the alterations in the mechanical properties of in-house three-dimensional (3D) printed orthodontic aligners after intraoral ageing. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the aligners were not affected after 1 week in service.

Thermo-mechanical properties of 3D printed photocurable shape memory resin for clear aligners

Se Yeon Lee et al.

Summary: The thermo-mechanical and viscoelastic properties of a new material for direct 3D printed clear aligners, TC-85, were compared to a conventional thermoplastic material, polyethylene terephthalate glycol. The results showed that TC-85 exhibited superior flexibility and viscoelastic properties, allowing it to constantly apply a light force to the teeth, reduce force decay, and maintain a constant orthodontic force. Furthermore, TC-85 demonstrated geometric stability at high temperatures and shape memory properties, providing advantages for clinical application.

Stress Relaxation Properties of Five Orthodontic Aligner Materials: A 14-Day In-Vitro Study

Paolo Albertini et al.

Summary: The stress relaxation properties of five different thermoplastic aligner materials were investigated after 14 days of constant deflection. The results showed that the yield load, yield strength, deformation, and stiffness of the materials were similar in single-layer samples, but lower in double-layer samples. F22 Evoflex and Erkoloc-Pro maintained the highest percentages of stress, while Duran and Durasoft had the lowest final stress values. All materials displayed rapid stress decay in the initial hours of application before reaching a plateau phase.

Direct 3D Printing of Clear Orthodontic Aligners: Current State and Future Possibilities

Gianluca M. Tartaglia et al.

Summary: The recent introduction of 3D printing technology in dentistry has revolutionized the production of clear aligners, offering a more personalized and precise alternative to thermoformed ones. Direct 3D printing allows for better control of force vectors for tooth movement, resulting in increased accuracy, stability, and treatment efficacy compared to traditional aligners. Further studies are encouraged to explore the full potential of this new technology.

3D printing of dental restorations: Mechanical properties of thermoplastic polymer materials

Lisa Marie Schoenhoff et al.

Summary: This study compared the mechanical properties of dental restorative materials manufactured using different materials and processing methods and found that 3D printed PPSU had lower flexural strength, with filament quality affecting mechanical properties. Extruded PPSU showed comparable performance to PEEK, making it a potential alternative for dental prostheses manufacturing.

A Review of 3D Printing in Dentistry: Technologies, Affecting Factors, and Applications

Yueyi Tian et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies, based on computer-aided design digital models, have been widely used in various fields for nearly 30 years, including dentistry. Despite advantages such as high material utilization and manufacturing complex geometries, they also have drawbacks like high cost and time-consuming postprocessing. The future trend of 3D printing in dentistry will likely involve the development of new materials and technologies.

Dynamic mechanical and thermal properties of clear aligners after thermoforming and aging

Kazem Dalaie et al.

Summary: The study found that thermoforming significantly affected the flexural modulus and hardness of aligner materials, while aging had a smaller impact on these properties. Duran demonstrated greater thermomechanical stability compared to Erkodur.

Micro-computed tomography evaluation of general trends in aligner thickness and gap width after thermoforming procedures involving six commercial clear aligners: An in vitro study

Mario Palone et al.

Summary: The study showed that thermoforming affects the thickness and gap width of aligners, with different tooth types, regions, and aligner types influencing the results. In thermoformed samples, the thickness and gap width at anterior teeth and central positions were smaller than those at posterior teeth and occlusal surfaces.
