Application of 3D-printed teeth models in teaching dentistry students: A scoping review

Katarzyna Dobros et al.

Summary: The use of 3D-printed teeth models in dental education has been widely discussed. These models are found to be useful in acquiring hands-on skills for various dental procedures. However, there are still some issues with the reproduction of soft tissues in these models.

Comparison of five rotary systems regarding design, metallurgy, mechanical performance, and canal preparation-a multimethod research

Jorge N. R. Martins et al.

Summary: The study compared 5 rotary systems in terms of design, material, mechanical performance, and canal preparation, revealing differences in instrument geometry, surface finishing, and phase transformation temperatures. However, consistent results were observed in the untouched root canal walls after preparation with the tested systems.

Students' perception of three-dimensionally printed teeth in endodontic training

Markus Kolling et al.

Summary: The study found that students perceived 3D-printed teeth to be more beneficial for learning compared to resin blocks, but rated lower in aspects such as detail, spatial awareness when compared to human teeth. However, 3D-printed teeth were appreciated for additional benefits, such as higher cleanliness, availability, and standardization of training opportunities.

A critical appraisal of research methods and experimental models for studies on root canal preparation

Michael Huelsmann

Summary: This review critically presents the contemporary possibilities, limitations and challenges of research related to root canal preparation, emphasizing the clinical relevance and scientific evidence. While a plethora of experimental set-ups and techniques have been described in endodontic literature, further focus on biological aspects and clinical evidence is needed for a comprehensive understanding of the impact of root canal preparation on treatment outcomes.

The Impact of TruNatomy and ProTaper Gold Instruments on the Preservation of the Periradicular Dentin and on the Enlargement of the Apical Canal of Mandibular Molars

Emmanuel J. N. L. Silva et al.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of TruNatomy and ProTaper Gold instruments in canal preparation of mandibular molars. The results showed that both systems were similar in terms of untouched canal walls and remaining dentin thickness, slightly different in the apical transportation of mesial canals and the percentage of dentin removal at the coronal third, but without clinically significant errors.

Shaping ability of four single-file systems in the instrumentation of second mesiobuccal canals of three-dimensional printed maxillary first molars

Fulu Xu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated and compared the shaping ability of four advanced single-file nickel-titanium (NiTi) systems during the preparation of curved second mesiobuccal (MB2) canals in maxillary first molar replicas fabricated by three-dimensional (3D) printing via micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) imaging. Results showed that the M3-L instrument required more time for preparation compared to other systems, while Waveone gold (WOG) and XP-endo shaper (XPS) demonstrated less resin removal and surface area change. Reciproc blue (RCB) showed the poorest centering ability and the highest canal transportation at the apical level.
